1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

Well ive had this truck about 2 months now. Its a 72 lwb k10. 350 and Sm 465 and 205. My dad bought it for me as a college graduation present. it almost completely stock. the only changes i have found are the radio, seat, and steering wheel for the most part. at one point someone did do a crappy repaint.

My plan for the truck is to drive as much as possible while doing little things to make it a little nicer. then when the time comes and i can afford a frame off restoration i will. now to the pictures.

When i got it....

Next i removed the cracked dash pad and radio and ripped the old brittle glove box trying to get it out. i also found the original owners manual in the glove box.

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

over the last couple weeks i picked up 6 15x8 rally wheels for $150 and a set of 31x10.50 R15 Bfg All terrains with 50% tread for $200. Yesterday i got the tires on the wheels, and put them on the truck and this is how it looks now.

The next things to do are new dash pad and glove box. a radio delete plate and aftermarket stereo under the seat. new front and rear bumpers, new windshield, and all new cab seals, and door locks.

Cool truck! The best thing you can do with one of these old things is drive it every day. How's she run?

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

it runs and drives like a brand new truck. starts right up every time. steering is super tight. id swear it had 17,000 miles on it but im sure is 117,000 lol. it drives better than my 01 silverado

Hell of a deal on those rallies and bfg's, and what a difference it made! Cool truck.

The reason I ask is that my 67 4x4 has two and since I am converting to a np205 I need to dump the two and the carrier bearing and find a single. Thanks for the response.

Not a problem both my trucks have 1 piece driveshafts. i didnt know the 67's had 2 piece drive lines guess you learn something new everyday

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

400 miles and counting :metal: with no problems so far :metal: :metal:

Now if i could just get my other 72 sold i could start doing some more work on the truck

My truck is just like yours but a GMC. Odd thing about my truck is that the fender emblems said 2500 but the axles are 6 lug, another thing is that the gvw of my truck it 6600- the gvw of a 2500. I have put a little more that 2100 lbs of old shingles in the bed and was just on the helper springs. I dont understand why she has 1/2 ton 6 lug axles? Factory screw-up??

whats the vin number say? 1/2 or 3/4? also some one could have just swapped them in over the past 40 years for some reason or another

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

according to the vin its a 3/4 ton. The funny thing is, is that i bought it off the original owner and he said he never touched the axles!

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

Man those rally wheels and BFG's helped the looks a lot! Nice score on them too! As far as I know, only the trucks equipped with a Rockwell transfer case had a 2 piece drive shaft in the 4x4's and they quit using them in 69.

hmmm that is weird. light duty 3/4 ton possibly? i had a 94 that was a light duty 3/4 ton. it was a 3/4 ton with 1/2 ton 6 lug axles

Yeah i know some of the 90's gm 3/4 tons had 6 lug axles but i doubt they'd have a light duty 3/4 in back then. I'm thinkin its a factory screw up or i have a rare piece:lol: . It would be nice if it had the 16.5 inch 6 lug wheels, they are rare and were for heavy duty 1/2 tons and blazers!

Well, I moved it out of the shop to back out side about 3 weeks ago. Last week we moved it again and that's about it. It's supposed to be going to the body shop to get painted but I have to wait until the guy gets an open stall. So no real big progress.

Planning on putting a lift and bigger tires at all? Truck looks way better with the rallies and BFG's on it. Coming along nicely.

when i get the chance to do a frame off restoration i would like to go to a 33 inch tire. i don't know if a new set of springs will be enough to make them fit. if not probably do an add a leaf in the rear and ord zero rate in the front. if that wont work then i will have to step up the 2.5 inch lift kit.

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

got to do a little work on the truck this weekend. nothing picture worth but progress. First i cut some old exhaust brackets off that weren't being used. cut ugly looking tail pipe off and put an old echo tip on it hidden under the truck. sounds a little louder now but not much. Next i took the dash apart and got the last nut on the dash pad( the pain in the a$$ one behind the head light switch). then i proceeded to scrape old gear oil and dirt off my transmission and transfer case for about an hour and a half. Probably got close to a cubic foot of stuff off of them. guess thats what 40 years of leaking does lol. the bad thing is that they are still nasty. Last i washed the truck for the first time since i got.

Next TODO list lol
-Change all Fluids
-New windshield
-Radio
-New shocks
-New bumbers
-New Exhaust

thanks. ya i missed it saturday night lol. we got a big rain on friday. first big rain we have got in a long while. So i just had to go play in the mud. I regret it now but i took my 01 down a mile long mud road a couple times and got it completely covered. So i spent about 30 minutes washing it on sunday at home. now i need to take it to town and wash it with soap cause it still looks terrible. but it was fun at the time. So while the power washer was i out i sprayed down the 72. But it sure would have been nice to have had the flat bed to drive. I never had to worry about tearing it up haha it was already beat up and wore out. I highly doubt i ever mud my black one on purposethough. it drives way to nice to tear up in the mud. the only reason i drive my 01 over it most days is because of gas mileage

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

i got a question about my clutch....in my red and white truck. once the clutch pedal was depressed about 3/4 of the way it seemed to cam over and get easier to hold down. like when waiting at stop lights and such. but in my black truck it never gets easier or what i would think to call camming over... is there any way of making it do this by adjustment or something? or am i out of luck?
i hate the stiff pedal. when i press it. it pushes my back way up into the back of the seat and its not comfortable at all

Dieselwrencher 02-08-2012 04:19 AM

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

You might check the linkage rods for worn ends causing them to bind. Also, try greasing the z bar on the frame. It could be stiff too causing it to be hard to push.

alright i will look at those.....you think some softer springs on the pedal and clutch fork would help to or is that a no no?

thanks by the way

Re: 1972 K10 Project "Daily Driver"

More progress.....

-got new mirror heads for the truck due to the one missing the glass.
-changed the oil
-tightened the belts
-painted the radio delete plate
-then proceeded to buff the truck(by hand) until i ran out buffing compond

i will let the pictures show my work but i got the hood, roof and the whole passenger side done and the drivers front fender.

oh and a pic of my other pride and joy

If they've been replaced in the past they could be too heavy of a spring, but I'd try to make sure it isn't a wear issue first.

i dont think they have been replaced. while i was messing around this weekend i got under the truck and had my brother work the pedal and we came to the conclusion that something in side the truck is making a dragging sound so hopefully this weekend i can get that figured out and finish buffing it. :chevy:
