New faded paint?
 

What I'm would like to have is a truck that looks fifty yrs old but with no dents or rust. Imagine a truck bought new and stuck in the driveway for 50 yrs. Is there a way to paint a truck with out the glossy shine? I really don't know dilly about paint,but what if you didn't use a clear coat? Thanks any painters input would help.

You can use a flatter in a s/s paint....you can also play with the gloss in the clear in bc/cc

As a paint supplier for many years, I can tell you that what you are asking for is near impossible.

If you try to use a flattener in your clear, you will end up paying a lot of money to experiment (very hard to produce a perfect result) and/or have a professional paint it, and then you will have a paint job that looks shiny in places when you you rub it or wash it with a wash mitt making your flat paint job look like crap.

It took 50 years to make that paint look like it is today... if you want original looking paint, it was shiny. If you polished faded paint, it would shine like new.

If you want a truck that looks like it's 50 years old without shiny paint, get a gallon of white Rustoleum and a roller... you'll have a paint job that looks like it's 50 years old but will look like you painted it with a roller.

In other words, you're asking for something that doesn't exist. You are asking for fake patina... "fauxtina"... every single one looks fake... gross in my opinion.

Billions of dollars have been invested by the paint companies to make shiny paint for a reason.

I just talked to the guy at sherwin williams about my interior paint...I'm going with off white but don't want a glossy finish because the whole interior is painted metal and i dont want it so shiny it hurts to look at in the sun....im using single stage paint....he showed me a card with different levels of sheen and said he can ad whichever level i chose to kill the gloss....
Is there really something wrong with adding flattner?

Not on a dash. Yes if it's an entire truck because you won't get a consistent DOI...depth of image...or gloss. Plus you don't wash or drive your interior in the weather.

Ive seen a few patina trucks shot in both flat clear and regular clear. I don't mind it to be honest.

There are a few fauxtina threads on here you might want to look at to see if that is what you really want.

Of course that's in the SF bay area. In Tuscan Az it may be 38 years for the 50 year aged look.

I've shot a few carsn and trucks with flattened clear to stay away from the "fresh paint" look. A few of them had faded/patina paint that needed some touch-up before shooting the clear. My favorite mix is Southern Polyurethane's 1:1 Universal Clear with roughly 7% flattener added, very slow activator, and no reducer.

It's more evident in person than in pics, but it looks a lot like well preserved and buffed original paint. I've had multiple people at shows ask if it's original paint, so it's pretty believable.

On my dad's '66 C10 he wanted a duller finish, so I used 25% flattener. I think 15-20% would have looked better.

My old '66 was shot with Duplicolor paint shop lacquer, half matte and half gloss. It ended up being costing about the same as SPI but was very tough to spray (dried too fast) and slightly yellowed over time.

You can get same results by hammering on a second coat of clear before the first coat is flashed off. It's called solvent pop in some areas... something every clear company in the world tries not to produce.

Those are truly great looking trucks! They look unopolagetic . maybe thats alittle harsh but they dont look like the pretty boy with a big mouth that he cant back up. You for hire?

Definitely not the same look as solvent pop, not even close.

If you spray it with enamel and sand and buff it and dont wax it, it will dull back down after 6 months or so and have that classic look to it. At least that's what catalyzed centari always did for me. The spots that weren't sanded looked great, but everywhere I cut and buffed dulled back out

Man I miss the smell of a centari job the day after it was sprayed. It had a sweet smell to it.

What was the PPG paint, I think it was PPG, Deltron? There was one that had a HORRID smell unlike any other paint. And if you sanded it a year later you would smell it still! It was HORRID!

The paint on that beetle is exactly the finish I’m looking for. Looks like aged acrylic laquer without the cracks..
