ECE 6 lug disc brake rotors?
 

I have a 69 1/2 ton truck and I noticed that ECE sells 6 lug rotors. What do I need to purchase to put these on my factory manual drum brake truck? I noticed that they sell a conversion bearing kit as well. Does this mean that I can put the rotors on my current drum brake spindles?

I don't believe so. If I'm not mistaken they are designed to work with the spindles that Early Classic sells. It's much easier to get the a-arms, spindles, etc. from a 73-87 truck or 73-91 'burb and switch it over. All that stuff bolts to your original crossmember. Early classic sells the conversion kits, too Although they do cost some coin, they are top notch in terms of quality and customer service.

The ECE 6-lug rotors will work with any spindle that is made for an 1-1/4 wide rotor up to 1987 with some exception.

They will work with:
1) 71-72 spindles
2) 73-87 spindles (only the 1-1/4 inch wide version)
3) 73-91 2wd suburban spindles
4) 73-82 2wd blazer spindles.
4) All 63-70 disc brake conversion aftermarket spindles
You will also need to change the master cylinder and porportioning valve.

I did the ECE rotors with a set of 71-72 disc brake spindles.

Some aftermarket 63-70 disc brake spindles would allow you to use the original '69 balljoints and tie rods.

I don't know of a 6-lug rotor that will work with drum brake spindles.

I did the same. I have a 71 disc suspension under my 67. I bought a set of ECE 6 lug rotors and have been running them since late 2006.

I agree with the last statement, I don't think anyone has made any kind of "bolt on" kit. Most people buy new disc spindles because they want to lower the truck and get a disc brakes at the same time.

I'm not sure what the bearing conversion kit is for, but the drum spindles don't have any brackets or provisions to mount the disc brake calipers to.

There is a company that makes a disc brake conversion using the drum spindle,... BUT it requires you to use a 68-72 chevelle rotors which is 5-lug and the 5x4.75 chevrolet car bolt pattern.

Wow, if you can deal with the car pattern, that's less than half the cost of the ECE kit.

Thanks for the info. I have access to a 71-72 frame that has a complete disc brake setup on it. I'll just pull the complete cross member the next time I go up there. The frame also has a 5 lug rear end on it. Any idea what its worth? I notice a bunch of guys on the forums want them so that they can run five lug wheels. I just got a set of 6 lug rallyes for my truck so I don't plan on swapping to a 5 lug wheel.

Just remember that the '71-72 rearends are wider than the '67-70.

I knew there was some type of difference, but wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying. Any idea what it would be worth? I tried posting in the WIW section, but it says I don't have access to post there.

It's a great way to find/sell parts and "supporting the board" is a good idea anyway.

I'm starting to think ahead on what I need to convert my 67 manual drum/drum to power front disc. I'm planning on keeping 6 lug. Anyway, I have a place that has plenty of front disc donors that I have access to. So, from what I'm reading, it sounds like it's possible to get everything from a donor and then add the 6 lug rotors from ECE. Is this correct? Thanks!

You will have to use the tie rod ends from the 71-72 truck as well IIRC.

Yes. I swapped the entire suspension from a 71 onto my truck, I used the crossmember and all. I then just swapped the 5 lug rotors for the ECE 6 luggers.

67ChevyRedneck: Was that a direct swap or did you have to re drill any of the holes in the frame for the 71 crossmember? I'm in the process of trading a Camaro rear end to a guy for a 71 disc brake setup crossmember and all. Just looking for some insight on how difficult a project that will be.

Bolt for bolt it's the same. When I was at the junkyard I also grabbed the steering box, all the lines (rust free SC truck) and the power booster/mc and proportioning valve. Not 100% sure, I'm a little fuzzy on this, but I think that if you use your old steering box, I think you may need a 71/72 pitman arm for it, but if you get everything off of a 71/72, it will all bolt up.

so is there a kit that lets you keep your original 6 lug drum spindle and convert it to 6 lug disc? so kit would have caliper, rotors ect

I have been considering the swap that uses the chevelle rotors and camaro calipers. One thing that bothers me is its an 11 inch rotor compared to the trucks 12 inch rotor. Being that my truck has front drums I would think that upgrading to disc would be a huge improvement even if they are smaller rotors. I haven't been able to find anyone with the conversation to ask how it actually works so I am waiting before I decide if that's how I want to do it. I want the car pattern for wheel choice and only use the truck as a street strip toy.

WHO is ECE and where do I get JUST the 6 lug rotors that fit the 70-87 1 1/4" spindles???

No, as mentioned above there is not kit that allows you to use drum spindles AND 6 lug disc. They only way to use your drum rotor is with the Ecklers kit and "it requires you to use a 68-72 chevelle rotors which is 5-lug and the 5x4.75 chevrolet car bolt pattern"

No, I don't want to keep the original spindles, I have a 5 lug 73-87 setup on my 63 and I want the 1-1/4" 6 lug rotors so I can keep my 6 lug wheels.
