71 GMC Ol Green

Well,
I bought my GMC when I came home in 2008 from Iraq from a guy in Tucson AZ, I got it at a pretty good price and found it to have some hidden issues (dont they all). Found that the frame was bent like a pretzel, but I am always up for the challenge. First upgrade was delay wipers, then came the rallys, then power windows, tilt, Dodge Ram power seats with a console. AC with serpentine setup was last summer. The last couple of weeks I went crazy and re-framed it, taking out the leaf springs and putting in a coil spring frame, had a 700R4 built, I re-geared the rear with 3.42 and installed the camaro calipers. Also added ECE rear 4 inch coil drop springs and shocks. This is now one smooth daily driver...... Smitty |

Re: 71 GMC Ol Green
That's a verr-rry nice '71 GMC. I've got a 70 GMC 1/2-ton long bed (green). I'm looking to install a 700R4 tranny (a Monster trans unit) like you with a Lokar shifter in place of the TH350/B&M floor shifter in there now.
Could you tell me if it's a straight swap or were there any mods required to the drive shaft? Did you keep the original torque converter or did you upgrade? I'm running a crate GM Performance 350 ci w/330 hp and 380 ft lbs. I dig your new seats too. Any advice you could share would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work. - Phil |
Re: 71 GMC Ol Green
Thanks Phil,
The driveshaft has to be cut about 3 inches, then it goes right in, you also have to move your crossmember back, 700R4 is 3 inches longer than a turbo 350, unless you have the long tailshaft. The guy that built the trans put in a new converter, stock stall. The seats came out of a 2001 Ram, I did a post on it. Smitty |

Re: 71 GMC Ol Green
I really like the color and wheels you chose.

Re: 71 GMC Ol Green
I am not feeling the wheels anymore, I am looking to put another set of Rally's back on and see how that looks with the new color. It should drop a little more in the rear once the rhino line is put in this Feb.

Finally put some Rallys back on the old GMC. Had the rims powder coated again with a darker grey. Looks awesome.
