700r4 problems!!

hey all, i just got my 700r4 installed but it is not popping into gear. ill give you a little history of the tranny which may help diagnose what is wrong. i bought it 1.5 years ago and it worked fine until it stopped going into 3 & 4th gear. but i could still drive it in forward and erverse to move the truck. anyways, i sent the tranny back to the manufacturer to get it fixed and fedex ended up dropping the transmission and cracking the case. i got the case all welded up and put in a new torque converter. the transmission never made it to the shop, so it never got looked at. anyways, i tried installing it with the new torque converter, and put the transmission into gear, but nothing happened at all!! can any of you think what might be wrong?? thanks in advance.

I have heard that some times you need to wind the truck up to 100mph to get a rebuilt tranny to go into 4th.....

I know that some of these things are really stupid, but I've done worse:

Forgot to bolt torque converter to flexplate?

No fluid?

Shift linkage not hooked up properly?

Is it doing ANYTHING?

Can you feel it go into gear, or can you run the shifter though the gears and nothing happens (does the engine idle change at all?) Will it move at all??

How did you install the torque converter? You have to be exremely carefull with them. The fluid pump (on the inside of the tranny) has two plastic dog ears that have to fit into the slots on the torque converter. They are very easy to break off. If all of the above checks out, I might be inclined to believe that the pump is not working? Either that or something is big time messed up?

You said that Fedex had dropped it and that the case had to be repaired and that it never made it back to the manufacturer? So, you fixed the case and tried to use it and it doesn't work, right? Did I miss something, somewhere?

I wouldn't have fixed it, if Fedex dropped it. Didja have insurance on it? If so, and if it was sufficient, I'd have considered that my lucky day.....new tranny, on order.

Otherwise, if you saw Jesse James in Iraq, with his buildup of a trashed-out HumVee, you would have seen his problem with being in Iraq without any parts for the front pump on his tranny....after one of the mechanics said there was no reason for it to not run. Then, Jesse reminded them of his dream that nobody had put ATF in the torque convertor, which ultimately ended up roaching the front pump gears.

But, what about the sprag gears? The factory sprags are weak, and it sounds like they may be the problem. But, if it has been professionally rebuilt by a reputable company, they should have upgraded the sprags to a beefier component.

Beyond that, the pressures that must be controlled that affect shifting, may not be correct....leading back to the throttle adjustments.

You said you bought a new torque converter so what year is the tranny?cause if it is an 82 through 85 it has a 27 spline input shaft and if you got a newer TC they have a 30 spline which will go on the older trannys but you ain't going nowhere. If you went the other way the TC would not install because the spline is too big for the TC.

Wow, didn't know that! I'll need to watch for that when I get mine in a couple months! Could that have hurt the pump at all? I know they're "delicate." (I've broken the ears off of one before:(::banghead:)

Re: 700r4 problems!!

thanks for the ideas of what might be wrong. i am still not sure what it might be though. the transmission was a performance tranny built by a reputible shop that has been in business for 20+ years, so i know that all of the internal components have been beefed up. and i know i installed it correctly because i have installed the 7004r before it broke down the first time and it worked perfectly fine. the only thing i can think of is that the torque converter is a 30 spline shaft and its too big for mine (its a 27 spline shaft) but if that were the case, wouldnt i have heard some sort of a grinding noise?? anyways, i guess i will keep trouble shooting or else i will just buy a th350 to put in there. btw, does anyone know what type of th350 is the same length as the 700r4? thanks
