my 1970 C30 HD project

well the time of year has come to start the winter project up. i thought id share mine with you guys, and ask some opinions. i have a 1970 chevy C30 350/4 speed duelly long wheel base. eventually when its done we want to use the truck to haul my farmalls with. so we decided we'd update the drive train and have a heavy engine and trans option in mind,...thats top secret for now..lol were looking at a 1999 chevy 3500 HD for our doner truck. were planning to swap the 2wd i beam front axle over and the rear over to our frame. ill try to get some pictures up tomorrow. :chevy:

Have you considered using the whole 99 chassis? I built a 4x4 using a 02 Dodge chassis- (with a Cummins)- & made body mounts to install my 72 body on. Built it in 03 & has worked well- just an idea

No matter what chassis you use, a truck like that is just screamin' for a diesel. I would suggest either an 03-up Duramax 6.6 or an old school GM 6.5L. I'm a firm believer in keeping everything the same brand as much as possible. If that doesn't float your boat, you can always put in a Cummins.

lol its actually ironic that you used the words screamin', and diesel... i must agree with you on the brand loyalty...but i have a diffrent Gm diesel in mind...

That should be cool, I used to drive a 3500HD rollback, they are good trucks.

Yessir were going to eventually dropping a 4-53 in it with hopefully a roadranger rto6610 behind it. I got the motor still looking for the trans
The Hd's are good heavy trucks. Perfect drive line for this project

Wow. A two stroke? That'll definitely be a screamer. I took diesel mechanics in college, so I know all about those old things. What truck did the engine/trans come out of?

yessir, i thought it would be fitting for the old beast. the engine is actually out of an old trackhoe originally. i dont have a trans quite yet. im lookin for the roadranger rto 6610 cause its a 10 speed, with an OD, so hopefully i can hit 62 mph..lol but it ought to pull a house down.

I'll be watching this project. I'm a fool for the Jimmy 2-stroke screamers and want something powered by one before my time passes. I hope you can find a complete 3500HD chassis to donate cuz that's one hella frame. You'll have medium duty strength throughout in a compact package. Not to mention how it will simplify the whole project.
On the whole keep it all GM thing...While I'm a diehard dyed in wool GM man,and even a long time GM diesel diehard,I feel that stuff does not apply when it comes to trucks. First of all,Dodge doesn't make a Diesel and neither does Ford. Only GM makes their own and the other two have used GM diesels in their trucks. Real trucks are built from components with drivetrains spec'd out how the customer sees fit.

i gotta agree with you, i love those old 2 strokes. ive wanted one for a long time. so my best friend and i decded to build one..lol were hopeing to have it running by spring. but we have a long long way to go before shell be done.

on another note i think i found my doner. its a 94 3500hd. all thats left of her is an almost rolling chassie( missing 4 of the 6 tires) so perfict for my project.
ps if hanone has any 10 lug 19.5" rims and tires near W.C. ohio lemme know.

I agree, and you could get a Cummins in your GM truck brand new back in the 80s. Put whatever will work best in there.

yea kind of, but its gunna be tough to find the correct bellhousing and a splitter. at least around here

im leaning to the Roadranger RTO 6610. its a 10 speed. with an OD. but its proving to be hard to locate. i really want to stick with the 10 speed i think, iathought that twin stick would be really cool.
