Flowmasters getting on my nerves...
 

Okay I am running a 427 with flowtech headers with 40 series flowmasters dumped under the bed of my truck. And it was okay when I wasn't driving the truck that much but as i spend more time driving the truck, it is way too loud for my taste (Getting old I guess :lol: ). Anyways what mufflers are you guys running that are not as aggressive as the 40 series but still sound good? Thanks.

I switched my BBC/'62 Bel-AIR from 40 Flowmasters to Magnaflow Super Turbos. Much more liveable inside and still sounded healthy.

I ran the 40 series for two years. First with them dumped under the bed. I later ran them out the back. Running them out the back made a huge difference to in-cab sound! Makes them much more tolerable. I later switched to 50 series for the good of my neighbors :) They are dumped and sound as loud as the 40s out the back.

The muffler shop tech told me that a dumped setup causes the sound to reverberate between the ground and bed causing a lot of sound to be transferred into the cab.

Yeah I would run them out the back first, this way its still loud just behind you.. :)

I must agree since I did the same thang, run them out the back and get that droning noise out of your head.

Whatever muffler you chose you still need to get the exhaust to exit out back out from under the truck the resignation from the exhaust will still be there maybe try tail pipes first. Well that's my 2 cents worth of advice. And an X pipe helps alot too

I was a Flowmaster guy for about 20 years, until I bought my first Magnaflows. Now I won't ever own any more Flowmasters.

I prefer the raspy, snarl sound of Magnaflow over the deep resonating of Flowmasters.

I guess I'm the odd ball here. I run generic mufflers and love them. No since in paying that kind of money for something never seen in my opinion.

By the cheapest muffler you can. I have mine dumped over the rear end. I can talk normal in the cab and hear the radio fine. I wouldn't spend a bunch on a muffler for a D/D.;):chevy:

It's when the pipes stop shortly after the mufflers and exit down towards the ground somewhere underneath the undercarriage.

I just picked up an off topic truck (old unibody) with a healthy 350 Chev, 3 inch exhaust and Flowmasters. It dumps about midway under the box. The cab is all bare metal with no insulation at all. Its very loud in the cab and right now it just gives me a big grin when I jump on it =)

Now if I had to drive it all the time I would go insane. Future plans are to completely insulate the cab with Lizard Skin sound and heat barrier. Its just a fun little truck so I wont be going crazy.

I did have Flow 40s on a 71, but they were pretty far back in the system and the exhaust ended up all the way out the back with no dump. It was fine in the cab.

I've got a good ole Thrush glasspack exiting out the rear and it sounds like my old truck back in the 70's. My Monte has 3" series 40 flowmasters and I can't hear anything in the cockpit. I love both sounds.

I have a flowmaster 40 coming off stock manifolds, and it dumps under the bed of my 78 c10. I thought it was loud until I got my 1970 with long tube headers and dual 40's running out the back. Its really loud, but now that Im used to it, I want it louder. I just sounds so good when you stomp on it. Perfectly tuned for the ears.

I had flowmasters on everything I owned for years, now I prefer Dynomax mufflers. just my .02 cents.

I am running the 50 series flowmasters on my 69' 454 and they sound amazing exiting behind the truck but too quiet for me. Might be what your looking for if your staying with flowmaster. I personally am going to switch it up to super 44's or 40's when I can but I drive about 10x a year and want it wicked loud!

Pipes out the back will help get rid of the resonance even if you run straight pipes. It was bad enough with my 71 when I had a pair of burned out glass packs that had been on a 65 I had had that turned out and exited in front of the rear wheels. It was fun on runs to town but I drive 23 miles to work and the drone got pretty tiresome after a couple of years. I went to Headers, turbos (unknown brand but free) and tail pipe that exit behind the rear wheels and it's comfortable in the cab now but it still has a good rumble and sounds great with the windows down.

I've always said that I like a sweet and distinctive set of pipes but I've long outgrown loud just for the sake of being loud.

mufflers make your motor sound neat, but you cant hide horspower.

I'm running Flow tech Terminators and am happy with them. The truck was my daily driver for a few years & they're not too loud inside. They don't have that hollow Flowmaster sound (which I don't care for)

I have flow master super 40s dumped . Noise really only bothers me after a long ride and I'm stopped somewhere . The main problem isnt the noise it's the dust. Everyday I drive the truck I have to wash it. Next off day I'm running pipes out back . Didn't want to cause I plan on bagging truck this winter .

You must be in the 'tween years cause now that I'm older I'm beginning to like the low rumble of the exhaust again. I saw a man that looked older than me ('course that's what we all say) cruising in a loud hotrod some time ago.

There's something nostalgic about a gray haired ol' guy cruising down the highway with loud mufflers. Brings a tear to the eye... ;)

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday. I have Flowmaster 40s that exit behind the the rear axles, and I'm about tired of the decibel level in the cab, (not to mention my neighbors probably want to shoot me whenever I wake their babies up at midnight to go get a pack of smokes.) The stainless exhaust was done about 12 years ago, and it's still in great shape. I'll replace with something quieter when it wears out.

Guess I must be getting old, too. I cringe now whenever I see those asinine giant wagon wheels, or somebody's pride and joy cowl induction hood scoop. It took me my whole life, but I've finally come to appreciate dead stock as the ultimate beauty trick. And yeah, I know... it's all in the eye of the beholder.

The dust is my second biggest complaint on the dumped setup. For that reason I keep her on the street. Every now and then I have no choice. I hate when that happens.
