Growling Noise in 2004 Silverado Right Dash Area
 

Sounds like it might be the blower motor for the A/C, but only happens after a dead stop and then start rolling. A bad bearing would make noise all the time, seems like. Thanks for tips, LBJ

Still growling! It's too deep a growl to be the blower motor. It really sounds like the tire rubbing on a fender but it happens going straight down the road. Guess I'll ride it out till whatever it is totally fails. Ha

Does it change with the road speed or is it just a constant one note drone.

The blower would change with the fan speed.

A tire rubbing would be obvious from the clean rubbed stripe on the tire after a few mile trip on blacktop.

Have you checked the front brake pads lately?

how many miles?

2wd or 4wd?

recent repair history of components in this area?

isolated noise to under chassis, under hood or in cab yet?

Quick answers, haven't seen any marks on the tire.

Seems to be the same noise. No change.

95K miles, 4WD. Had the A/C system recharged several months ago due to a leaking charge access valve. No other work on the truck lately. Since it only happens while I'm driving, and only lasts a few seconds, haven't isolated it further than coming from behind the right dash.

Brakes haven't been touched since brand new. I've checked them and they are still good. But obviously, with only 95K miles in 15 years, I'm not that hard on brakes and vehicles.

Just spitballing here...

Try to change the fan speed when it's making noise. If it's the blower it'll change pitch.

If the AC is slightly low on refrigerant you could be hearing bubbles in the evaporator.

The blend motors get clikety clackety when the gears get dodgy but they get really obnoxious and stay that way.

Hatzie, I'll try to change the blower motor speed next time. It happens intermittently. Cannot predict when it will happen. I changed the blend motor earlier this year, for the driver's side, anway. I had the freon recharged and it seems to be holding as the A/C stays pretty cold. the mechanic changed out a cheesy GM part that goes bad on many GM cars. He replaced it with an aftermarket brass fitting that also had a Schrader valve.

Wildly intermittent faults are a bunch of fun to track down ain't they. Almost as much fun as a root canal.

Only thing you can do is wait for it. It has to be acting up to find it.

hmm, intermittent and still not sure where sound emanates from but sounds like in dash area..

possibly either of these?

mode door actuator just above and right accelerator pedal, just replaced mine couple of weeks ago..

it was growling because it was running over travel limits and slipping inside the sector, eventually failed to defrost vents only..

temp blend door actuator under/behind glove box, mine is thumping now so probably next..

actuators can change sounds due to slight voltage variances between idle and off idle engine rpm..

my '02 has 190k on it and the windows raise a little faster with some throttle :lol:

btw, if you end up needing to replace this actuator, DO NOT follow the idiots on youtube..

I could not find one single tutorial that explained the r&r correctly and figured it out by myself..

pm me if you end up needing assistance.. there's a little trick to getting the cam followers lined up in their grooves on that sector that was not posted anywhere on the internet I could find..

Killer Bee, I replaced the door motor for the driver's side last year, or so. I think I might have read your comments on how to to do that one right. It's still working fine, but maybe it's the one on the passenger side.

I wouldn't have made a good professional mechanic. My method of repair is wait till it breaks down, then fix it! ha. Diagnosing what's wrong is the hard part - fixing it is easy. Thanks, LBJ

PS. I looked at that link on Amazon. One post said he thought he ordered a "genuine" AC Delco part for $49 and got a "made in Korea" part he could have bought elsewhere for $20. Ha. I order these parts from Rock Auto. If they say its Delco, it's Delco. Plus they usually have several alternative manufacturers to pick from. My 2 cents.
