How Many Have A/C Thats Works?

How many of you have an A/C cab with the A/C that works correctly? I have seen quite afew of these trucks and quite often the A/C has been hacked up or removed all togeather. Why do people feel the need to CUT the A/C out with a hacksaw?

Anywaym, mine is a 69 and the A/c works great.

I have a 72 GMC and the air is so cold it will freeze you out of the truck. -Craig

Project1970 04-11-2002 07:27 PM

Mine does, when there's Freon in it. I think it lost a lot more than the usual can's worth this winter, though...I'm putting more in tonight.

Mine works but takes a little bit to get cold. Needs more Freon put into it.

Hasn't had anything done to it in 30 years so its about time.

I take that back. My great uncle did run a toggle switch to shut it on and off since the switch built in doesnt work but we're gonna fix that soon.

Both of mine work, the one in the truck is awesome, but the Jimmy has just too much interior space for the same AC unit. The truck looks like the clutch is leaking oil, so it won't be long for this world...

Mine works, but needs some freon every summer.

RipMeyer 04-11-2002 08:08 PM

Now for the next question. What do you use to recharge it?

I was thinking on using DuraCoolŪ. Direct replacement for R12. No modifications needed and suposed to be a tad bit cooler.

Andy4639 04-11-2002 08:24 PM

I up graded to 134-a in mine, and have had no problems with it. You can see it on my web sit in signature, also put 80 model stuff in it to clean up the fender. No poa valve. Works great! Here is the outside part. http://pic5.picturetrail.com:80/VOL8...1//8762792.jpg

You guys with AC are so lucky. It would be so great to have a truck with AC. Some day I'll find an aftermarket kit and adapt the cab. Till then you guys stay cool and I'll keep the windows down.

My 69 ac works great have never had trouble[knocking on wood]

busterwivell 04-12-2002 10:49 AM

My 71 is a factory A/C truck, but it never worked since I bought it. The belt wasn't on it. The under dash unit has an "S" shaped piece that fell off and is under the seat. Now the fan has quit working. I've been debating what to do, and I think I'm leaning toward taking it all out and putting in a Vintage Air setup. I talked with them at Goodguys - DelMar last weekend. they have a complete system for our trucks for $1095.00. What would you do?

racedvl 04-12-2002 08:44 PM

busterwivell,
It seems to me that it would be much cheaper to fix the setup you have. Also, then it would be all original. Of course any parts dealer would suggest a new Vintage Air system. Just my opinion. Darren

Hutch 04-13-2002 12:01 AM

You might check into Old Air:
http://www.oldairproducts.com/

They are out of Fort Worth Texas and have a system that will make use of the original
cab equipment with upgrades like sanden compressors, keeps the original look but updated.
Mine is not working but all I need is a compressor expansion valves and a charge.
Looking into the Sanden for a replacement on the compressor and going with one of the new R12 replacements for a charge.

I remember riding in my brothers old 1950 Chevy Ton Truck Flatbed... of course no AC. It would get so hot in there sometimes.

Can you guys with AC tell me which side your alternator is on? My Non-AC '69 Longhorn has the alternator on the passenger side, and I'd like to convert it to an air cab . . . do I need to move my alternator to the driver's side, or can it stay where it is? Thanks! Lee

I think people didn't want to spend the money on the ac if it broke.so they would just take the compresser off if It was in the way.

72LNGHRN 04-15-2002 12:09 PM

Converted mine to R134a about three years ago havent had any problems with it yet.Already been using it about a month here in the desert.Keeps the cab cool even with all the air leaks in the cab.
