My 1948 gmc build

Here's the start of my 48 gmc, using a 1950 frame.
The plans are a 4 inch drop axle in front and some kind of 4 link and bags in the rear.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

Looking like great work so far. Out of curiosity why start with a 50 frame?

Im interested to see how this turns out. Most of the V8 swaps include a frame swap as well so Im curious to see how it all comes together!

I am using the 50 frame because that what I had, the cab I am using is off a 48 2 ton.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

Got the new leaf springs installed, still waiting on the drop axle. Any one have any good idea on what link setup to run on the rear. I want the back bumber on the ground.

Ah cool. Yea I have a 50 so I was wondering why you would use it instead. Gotcha.

Hope all goes well with your build. I will be keeping and eye on it.

Not a real big up date, Got the rear stripped, and ordered a Gambino's Kustoms tail dragger kit.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

Using a 54 bumber upside down so I can run exhaust through the cutout. The rear is out of mid sixtys truck.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

I think I am going to find a different rear end. I don't like how much rust was on the axle tube.
The new mount would be right in this area.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

Got a rear end out of a 69 gmc and tacked into place. Still wating on the 4 link.

I also got the rear 4 link tacked in and stated on the notches.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

hey man, might want to run that rear axle up and down and watch what the pinion angle does, I have seen a lot of 4 links with upper bars in front of the axle instead of on top and they almost always have weird pinion issues, pointing down the more drop you get. If thats what happens, you will need to move the mounting points to the top of the axle.

looks like the lowers might hit the frame too, or is that an illusion?

ADchevys 11-06-2015 03:29 AM

Re: My 1948 gmc build

That's plan every thing is lightly tacked.

ADchevys 11-06-2015 04:35 AM

Re: My 1948 gmc build

The lowers will be close but I think they will clear. Thanks for the advice, any input is welcome

I'm in on this build. Subscribed. I am starting with pretty much the same thing. '53 GMC cab and frame. Mine is a 5 window split windshield. I will be keeping an eye on this build for ideas.

Got her back on the ground tonight. The front should come down another inch when I get the drop springs and the right size tire.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

This truck is my inspiration and direction I'm going with this build, although I only plan on a 3 inch chop. I want to put the back window on the belt line to make the glass equal all the way around.

Finally got moved and the old house up for sale. Looking forward to working on this again. Look for updates soon.

Re: My 1948 gmc build

Plans changed a little bit, decided to to run stock height springs in the front. Also I didn't like the way that four link fit the frame. I plan on going with a parallel 4 link and Panhard bar. Got the frame boxing plates tacked in where the 4 link will mount.

So do you recommend against the Gambino's kit?

ADchevys 08-07-2016 02:48 AM

Re: My 1948 gmc build

It's a good kit, very well made I didn't like the way it fit the frame. I plan on using it when I bag my 51 fleetline.

ADchevys 08-11-2016 10:20 PM

Re: My 1948 gmc build

Started taking in the 4 link.
