Salt fog test

https://youtu.be/lZEyjR7jTWk This is a video covering different products such as paint over rust products, rustoleum, calcium sulfonate coatings, zinc phosphate epoxy. I hope you'll find this educational

Good information.

I have viewed that one, in the end it seems that nothing holds. I highly doubt anyone would subject their work to that type of environment but it sure singles out all the snake oils.

The only one it held up was Aluminum pigmented permanent rust sealer with the AG 111 topcoat.Accelerated salt fog testing is designed to give you an idea of how long a coating will last. In the Northeast if you use your vehicle daily salt exposure is heavier and more intense than this test which is only 5% salt solution.

Not a valid test in my book...was there any surface prep? How about paint thickness? Simply putting paint on sample panels and subjecting them to a 2k hour salt fog test without any control measures is a waste of time.

The video certainly wasn't shot in a laboratory. He stated that he did the surface prep as these manufacturers suggested and he applied 3 coats. The test is good enough for me since most of these manufacturers claim you can paint over rust

That video was made to promote a single product...

May not be gold-standard testing, but still a valid data point. There is a lot more to understand about these products than just how well they perform when applied under tightly controlled laboratory conditions. Sure, that gives you the baseline for comparing the fundamental effectiveness of the product, but for my part, knowing how these perform when applied to lab-prepped panels is probably less significant than knowing how forgiving they are when applied in my garage. Way too many variables to control for in this video, but if we had 10, 20, 30 more from various places, all those data points would start to become significant. Unfortunately, we just have this one and the few other random tests posted on YouTube. All the rest of the testing provided by the manufacturers is just a glorified advertisement.
