Ram air hood ..thoughts/ideas ????

Ok summer is here I'm getting ready for the caddy swap and had a thought on keeping cool air to the carb and engine bay..so heres goes any input or thoughts are more than welcome....as you know it will be different......

If you look where your emblem is on the hood theres nothing behind it?? I was thinking of cutting a section out there (maybe the shape of the bow tie) and boxing it so that it went back over the air cleaner (you know the open kind you see) with a cut out so when the hood was closed it would fit over the air cleaner.( like the Chevelles had) ..to get fancy you could put a flap in it operated by one of the Vacum motors off one of the vents and hook it to the carb for that true ram air.....or just let it breath

I figured that this would keep the hood top looking stock and since its on the flat front it would get the best ram air effect

Food for thought since my hood needs work there anyway...

this would be very Kool if I had the 67 style hood and the flap opened upward then layed back flat..you could even leave your bow tie on!!!

How about the hood latch?I think it`s a cool idea but I`d just run ducts under the bumper or in the wheel well. How about over or through the core support and pull air from behind the grille?

sounds like it would be pretty slick is the air cleaner going to be boxed? only thing i would wonder is if the bow-tie hole would be big enough but lots of people do just run a tube to the grille for a cold air

Re: Ram air hood ..thoughts/ideas ????

I was looking again and it seems like the hole from is almost pre boxed?? the front support only has a couple of holes so running something to duct it over the air cleaner.Yes I was thinking of boxing the air cleaner with about 1" extra to allow the rext of the cool air to blow over the intake?? Yea you could make it seal but that would be tons more work..I think?? Also since the hole front is pre boxed by the hood support you could cut the intake holes just about anywhere or any size...

my tought was to weld up the box to the hood (this helps with hood flop) also when you open the hood it has a VERY KOOL factor to it..with out duct work running everywhere

and Yea I could duct air from the grill or wheel well or even the vents under the windsheild but I was just kinda thinking out loud for something new....you watch someone will take this idea and run with it$$$..it always happens to me

I think this will require some cardboard, some tape and a few beers to see how it looks and fits...I only have my little ponie motor so I wouldn't make anyting out of steel till after I find out where the caddy's carb it going to sit.... beside with the motor out I could get in the engine bay and see how the clearances are.....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...............................

What about getting one of the air inlets from a BB C-50... the kind that go through the side? I think they are kinda cool, and would look like it came that way.:smoke:

I don't think the hood emblem would be big enough to feed your engine... unless you get one of the giant ones off a Step-Van!

ok since I'm doing other things that give me a few to stare at it ...How about this

I posted pics to help

Looking at the front hood support you'll notice that where my finger is pointing is in front of the rad...If I was to cut some holes into it that (I was thinking 2" hole saw 2 or 3 times) would allow cool air being pushed by the rad to go up into the hood support.....

the second pic is what it looks like from the air cleaners view...you'll notice the hood body line at the top and the rad, the fan shroud (don't look at the duct tape holding the crack in it) and the large flat area above that is the hood support......a box joining the hood support and air cleaner would route the cold air to the carb... this Idea requires NO visible hood mods all that needs to be done is the under hood plumbing....

I think the camaros and vettes ae using the air before the rad

Hmmmm........

hell this may even help with areo dynamics by releasing some of the air these bull dozers push...LMAO

I want to know 2 things:

How did you get under the hood with the motor to take that second pic??

More importantly, how did you reach the hood latch to get out?

:haha::haha:

Camera timer. Set it, put it on the air cleaner. Close hood. Easy as that?

You can get a ram air hood at US Body that would look great. Trevor

You have come across the same idea that I have been pondering for quite a while. My version differs a bit in that I want to cut a couple of 3" tall by 10 to 12" long sections out of the front of the 69 hood (extra hood) on each side of the bowtie emblem. Put the cutout sections on pivots and hook the flaps up to vacuum to work as the flap on a cowl induction hood does. Then box in and seal the area directly behind it and duct the incoming air to the air cleaner. The leading edge of the hood is the highest air pressure and flow area on the truck and would be an excellent area to supply fresh air to the engine. A person could run ducting hose or fabricate an upper and lower housing as used in a standard cowl induction hood, which is what I am going to do. Just as soon as I finish all these other little modifications and projects that keep popping up.

When doing this duct work under the hood, how do you stop the rain water from getting to the carb.?

Re: Ram air hood ..thoughts/ideas ????

you have to remember that these trucks are not sealed as tight under the hood as modern day small cars with such small engines, and that is why you see so many Cold Air Intake (CAI) systems used on them. lots more room for air to circulate in our trucks.

i think it sounds like a ton of work for such a very minuscule performance gain on such a large engine.

I plan on a 500 Caddy Very Soon..so it will fill the bay pretty well..but the Kool Factor will be very high and I dont think it will be ton of work..

There is another way which will probably work better. Smokey Yunik came up with the idea but every NASCAR stocker now uses a similar air box plumbed through the cowl to take advantage of the high pressure area in front of the windshield and you don't spoil the look of the front of the truck.

funny you say that I was Just looking at this

but I still like the Idea of using the high presure in front of the rad...just someting different

Re: Ram air hood ..thoughts/ideas ????

I've used kits from Hypermax engineering on 84 up ford diesels with turbo kits, and the cowl/firewall vents work well. I had a friend's truck that had a bad windshield seal bond and every time you would lay on the throttle, the suction from the engine would pull the windshield out enough for it to leak air. These kits had a drain/vent in the bottom of them to allow the water to fall down and go out the vent instead of going in the intake of the turbo. I had a mach 1 hood on my 97 F-250 and I had to unhook my ram air I built for it due to rain water being sucked in to my turbo inlet. I couldn't get any drain to work that I set up so I just unhooked it before I hurt something internally.

I see so many cowl induction hoods on these trucks, yet I have yet to see on where the aircleaner has the proper ducting to take advantage of the higher pressure air that can come in through the cowl. The reason the cowl induction hoods were first made was to take advantage of the naturally high pressure point crated by the windshield compressing the air as it goes by. Because of this, the air at this point is more pressurized than the air in front of the leading edge of the hood.

Adding an induction hood is only the first part. If you want to go all the way try this:

I agree but not that I know for sure with but with the areodynmics of a brick I would think the presure in front of the rad would be very high also...my thought was to cut out ( see above pics) and plumb it to the air cleaner like the one below using something like the box above.....if nothing else it going to get cool air to it instead if breathing the hot engine bay heat...

something like this...I wasn't going to goto the extreme of building the boot section...but more like the hood section

Put a 72 front bumper on it and run some ducts from the turn signal holes.
