1964 RC Chevy Crew Cab (scratchbuilt)

Had a couple requests to see the buildup of this Crew Cab, so here goes.

This truck is done, mostly. It could stand to have the cab rebuilt, but I'm not ready to tear back into it, just yet.

This is a picture of the truck I found on this forum, it is photoshopped, but at the time, I did not know that, or even that a 64 CrewCab existed. After some reading, I found out all kinds of things about them. Anyway....

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3481/4...8cc536ee_z.jpg

It was love at 1st site. (my wife says I have a huge garage of cars and trucks in my head, that I love. :), and its true)

There are only so many ABS hard bodies out there. If you want something different then a Toyota Hilux, Ford Sidestep,Toyota Tundra, various Jeep bodies, and some Land Rovers, Hummers, and FJ's and and an 80's style Chevy, you are out of luck. So you learn to build what you want..

This is the 80's Chevy body. You can make Suburbans, CrewCabs, Blazers, and a Van,(I have the only Chevy Van that size scale in the world, that I have found so far)

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4048/4...61491527_z.jpg

So here goes...

I did use a left over fender from a clod buster chevy body for an experiment.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4119/4...1bc2107e_z.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4137/4...43dac6ef_z.jpg

Made a quick grill

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4077/4...c0063725_z.jpg

Tacked these 3 pieces together with my pipe cleaner cement. (its like putting plastic water pipes together)

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4116/4...54e6b59a_z.jpg

More pieces from a cutup body..Making the hood

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4082/4...67a535c2_z.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4100/4...d307ff33_z.jpg

Tacked that all together..

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4075/4...56bb0bb7_z.jpg

Made the openings in the hood

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4138/4...c0e2eaff_z.jpg

Started on the Cab

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4135/4...a8e9a72a_z.jpg

A quick mock up, to see how it ws looking.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4123/4...5dc99962_z.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4095/4...1f725ddf_z.jpg

The next step was the bed, and there again I started with leftover clod buster chevy bed pieces.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4082/4...e4951480_z.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4078/4...12793aef_z.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4135/4...c0c8af59_z.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4094/4...96640138_z.jpg

And I think I will stop here tonight..

I'm hoping with the talent and skills you guys have with your real trucks, that if you want a replica of your pride and joy, its fairly easy to build these things. I just started this part of my RC hobby about 2 years ago.. and I'm not one of the better builders.

Making the inner rear fenderwells, and the tailgate

Worked on the grill more

Putting in the false wood bed

A guy in Indiana really liked this build, and wanted me to have this old chassis. It was made by Diaz or something like that.. in the early 2000's
(before I got into this)

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4080/4...ef79ef3f_z.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4136/4...6d3ecf46_z.jpg

For a time frame reference, it took about a month to get to this point in the build..

man you got skills, I like this might have to take this hobby up since i cant build all the stuff i want!!

Re: 1964 RC Chevy Crew Cab (scratchbuilt)

That takes some patience! After a month I would've just thrown a cardboard box with some picures of a truck glued to it on the chassis and called it done.

Very impressive, watching a bunch of scrap turn into something significant. Nice work!

Thank you creep, I understand completely, believe me. Most them of them have come close to hitting the far wall of the garage.

Thank you for the very good laugh. :) I needed it then.

Thank you, :) Actually, I did show it over there, and it had a fairly good following at the time. I still drop by there now and then, but it seems nowadays all they want to see is exocaged crawlers.

Where I live, I've never seen a rock crawler around here, so I like building them like this. I thinks its my age. :)

I used to spend most of my time on scale4x4RC, but even there I've slowed down. I need to update my 75 Blazer thread over there, but I just can't seem to get it done. I've come to the realization that I am somewhat of an :aw:

So how about a couple more pictures. :)

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4122/4...492124f6_z.jpg

It was time to work on this part. I don't like shiny frames, and things, at least the underneath of the body. Most times I paint everything flat black or add some rust looking stuff.

I was checking to see if the bike looked the right size in relation to the truck.

Got the bed railed and nailed down, and was making the tailgate chains and latches.

Re: 1964 RC Chevy Crew Cab (scratchbuilt)

Time to finish this story, I have taken too long now.

I'm gonna skip ahead, because most of its more boring then what I have showed so far.

Just some random pics.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4147/4...9a473e68_b.jpg

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4125/4...1e9111ef_b.jpg

and if I could have had a few of you around at the time of this build, the cab would not look like this, I don't think any of the guys on my other forum has ever seen one, so I had no one to tell me better.

and pictures on the WWW, never completely show what I need to see, so I may still tear the cab up and redo it..

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4154/4...ffc7458e_z.jpg

Took it out for its maiden voyage.

When you said you were making a 60s Chevy from a Clod body, I thought......well, it wasn't good. But WOW, did it turn out good. Looks amazing.

Re: 1964 RC Chevy Crew Cab (scratchbuilt)

Its been awhile since I've had much to say or show, but I wanted to show what I have been up to with the 64

When I first finished the truck, it was close, but no cigar, but I was sick of building it, I just wanted it done, so it didn't turn out so well the 1st time, in my eyes and a few others, :) and thats ok, it looks terrible.

So 1st, I cut the roof off

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7277/7...8f841fe3_z.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7138/7...89cae9f6_z.jpg

Then proceded to bring the pillars in, round out the body a little more, and make the lines line up a little better, in other words, fill it out, so that it looks a little more realistic...I hope.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7276/7...0163b7ff_c.jpg

Feedback would be great, I think its looking better, but you may see something I'm missing.

Thank you for looking.

You have some amazing scale fabrication talent! I agree though, the cab pillars did need a bit of massaging to look more realistic. Your rework definitely gives it a more correct appearance. Either way, your work is amazing! Nice work!

Thanks Guys, It's still not perfect, but I'm ready to get it rolling.

Here is where I am at the moment.

Its too humid to mask off the Turquoise, its still tacky, so I have to wait on painting the cab roof and pillars white.

I've been up since 3:30 am, It seems sleep avoids me at all cost, ever since I hit my 50's :)

So, I did a little masking, then used flat white on the cab with satin white over it.
