Stuck 3rd member .. any ideas?
So I'm tearing down my rear end for a rebuild and I can't get the 3rd member out..
It's a 12 bolt out of my '66 C10. I've got the main caps off, I pulled the large pin out that goes through the spider gears. That literally took me an hour of hammering to get out because it was worn/swelled/locked/rusted in there. The axles are also out.. I just can't get the third member to budge.. do i just need to get a bigger pry bar and some more muscle behind it? I can tell that moisture has been in there before, there is a good amount of pitting on the teeth of the ring gear. Am I missing something else that's holding it in? I don't see any thing else that could be other that it could be rusted in to place.. Thanks for your help! |
Re: Stuck 3rd member .. any ideas?
git a LONG pry bar, and ideally someone else to hold the third member, and pry on it. some rear ends i do, it takes me and my boss both with 4 ft. prybars to pry a carrier out. if the carrier has the holes on the sides, bout 1" round, pry one side and then the other. Hope this helps

Its one of those He-Man Butcher things. They have case spreadders for those tough ones. All the ones Ive ever messed with just fell out.

Yeah sometimes they are stuck in there pretty good, Like was already posted, a good pry bar and another person is a good idea. Someone to catch the carrier and help and try and keep track of which shims came from what side.

Got it out! I went to Harbor Freight and got a nice long pry bar for $6 .. me and a buddy pry'd it right out, no problems..
Thanks! |

Any time you can find a reason to buy tools is a good thing.
