project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
welp, here is the latest project, its a super clean 71 c10, it had a good running small block with a 700r4 trans.... but that's not how I roll, so initially the owner and I spoke about doing a LS swap, butttttttt, it turned into a full on build...
-power plant will be a 2018, L86, GEN5 6.2L, with a 10L80e (10 speed trans) - suspension will be ridetech coil overs, front and rear sway bars - brakes will be wilwood 14", aero6 6 piston - Dakota digital, vintage air, etc....... I hope photobucket holds out, and doesn't hold my photos hostage again, but here comes the pics :metal: |

Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
and here is the engine, like previously said, its a 6.2L GEN5 engine...
we wanted more power than the stock claims of 420HP, so we added a cam, deleted the DOD, new non-DOD lifters, ARP head bolts, dual valve springs, hardened pushrods, cam phaser limiter, etc... http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...pswmwwywht.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...psogh6gqms.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...pshsqgmyyj.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...pscjmitxwu.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...psq8aoibfz.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...ps4cis67rl.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...psxs9u0d6x.jpg |
Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
mounting it into my mock-up truck, the 1st problem I ran into was mounting it into the frame, the front of the stock truck style pan hits the cross member, plan A was to notch the cross member to clear the pan, but the stock steering would of been close (if not already touching), so plan B was to modify the stock oil pan, but the oil pick-up tube is pretty much casted into the pan itself.. so we went with a holley oil pan, and it has tons of room.. after the engine would 'fit', I scooted it back towards the firewall, so the headers, and everything else looked to be in a happy spot...

Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
as many may know these engine don't have provisions for power steering, or power brake booster vacuum outlet...
so to overcome that, we went with holleys front mount accys.. this is a really nice kit that comes with a new water pump housing/mounting bracket for the alt., a/c compressor, and power steering pump...the stock GEN5 water pump and front accy design is rather awkward looking to me anyways, and this kit give it a sleeker more 'traditional' look..as for the powered brakes, we are going with a hydro boost setup, so no need to tap vacuum off the engine, altho factory trucks have a vacuum pump mounted low on the driver side of the engine, that's belt driven.. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...pshzrqwsrm.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...ps6ghincx7.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...ps12498n6h.jpg |
Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
This is where I am with a Gen V 5.3 L83 swap in my 72 c10. My question is how far back to position the engine. By the pictures here it looks like yours is a bit farther back than mine. Am I correct in thinking the size of the blocks are the same?
Very nice work man... -Brian |

Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
once test fitted, it was time to get the truck down to the frame and continue on with the mock-up.. so out with the powertrain, and off with the front clip, cab, and bed..

Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
continuing on with the mock-up, I removed the factory trans crossmember, and located the new one, then mounted the engine and trans... and did a mock-up of the headers, again, but with the trans this time

Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
once satisfied with the engine/ trans fitment, out with everything again, and now was time to make the engine look good..so my go-to color on these swaps is a silver-ish color, but on this one, I mixed some blue (like the cab color) in, and it came out awesome... it has a super mechanical, industrial feel, that somehow matches the exterior blue too.. it came out really cool.. once everything was painted, I went ahead and assembled it all....

Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
Wow. That will be so nice. Was really clean to start also. What I wouldn’t give for a cab that clean :) I’m just going to ship mine to you now and let you finish my swap!

Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
Looks fantastic man. What harness are you using? Are those speed engineering headers? What gears will you be using? With a 29.5 inch tall tire and the final OD ratio of .636, you can get away with a 4:11 and still cruise at 74 mph at 2200 rpm.... :metal:
Care to expound on the build name? |

the build name came from this trucks color scheme, I did a another 71 c10 that looked like this truck years ago, and it had a new (at the time) 5.3/4l60e trans, with DOD, etc.. it was cutting edge at the time, as is this truck now.. so its killers twin and its a c10, and a 10 speed, so killers twin 10 seamed fitting.. |
Re: project killers twin 10 (gen5 10 speed trans)
