Camshaft selection and overdrive
 

Looking at a 224 duration (at 0.050”) cam and another 228 one for my 6L build. It’s a high compression pump gas build (I should be able to get by with a little more duration), and will have a 4L60e behind it. I’m open to torque converter options, depending on the cam I select, but was wondering about overdrive and bucking/drivability. I’ll probably be changing my rear gears to help raise my cruising rpms, but am debating how far to go. I do want overdrive.

What have you guys with overdrive been able to get away with for duration and have good cruise manners at 50+ mph?

I would ditch the 4l60e and start looking for a 4l80e which will live longer behind your 6 liter

What makes you think a 4L60E should be ditched for a 4L80E? There’s nothing wrong with a 60 behind a 6.0. Heck, GM offers an LS3 connect and cruise package with a 65 or 70 transmission.

So many people bash the 60 because the internet bandwagon said they’re junk. There’s nothing wrong with a 60 transmission.

I can attest to my stock 60 in my 2001 Silverado with a turbo 5.3 that has taken a beating for the last 3 years and still is going strong. Yes, all stock except it has a Circle D converter. I have built a 60 with just about every Sonnax part installed and it’s behind an 800hp 6.0 turbo. That transmission is going on it’s 5th year with zero issues.

So many haters of the 60 but so many also don’t know how good a 60 is. Two each their own.

Its a 6 liter comes with a 4l80e

and the fact I can take a mid mileage 4l80e use it as is with out having to put a ton of money into it with a lot of sonex parts to make it handle the abuse i know it will get

My .02 on the cam is I would do the 224I duration about 230 on the exhaust. Around .590 lift with either a 112 or 114 lobe center line. The 112 will give you bit more low end with more chop at idle. The 114 will smooth out the idle a bit but loose a bit at the low end. Should be a piece of cake to tune.
I like Circle and Yank billet converters. I have 3000 stall Yank in my 68. It drives like stocker until you nail it. Because where I live there are a lot of 40 mph roads so I have the tuner program the ECM to lock up the torque converter at 45 mph. Prevents lugging the engine.
I'm running 20" tires. 285/40. 4:10 gears.

Thanks. As you can see I posted this 3 months ago, but I’m glad to see your response. I went with a 224/228-0.600/0.600 on a 112. It’ll be some time before it’s all ready though.
