clutch quit working

My clutch in my 70' was working fine one moment and then it quit going into gear. After crawling under and looking, it appears that my pressure plate springs no longer return the forks to the proper position when the pedal is released. Could these springs have collapsed? Is this something that happens very often because I have never heard of this before? If so, then I guess the next step is clutch replacement. Any input would be appreciated.

I had the problem with the clutch fingers breaking before. I've had two cltuch pressure plates go out on me on other vehicles. I know one was because two fingers broke. I can't remember if the second one was from that or bad springs in the pressure plate. I've heard of it on a few drag cars though.

It's not very common as far as I know, just probably time to replace it. 30_+ years of springing, it may just be pooped.

Another thing that you might check, is that the clutch fork hasnt popped off the ball in the bell. Good luck....crazy AL:)

Sounds like you've got a collapsed pressure plate. Does the pedal seem to have a lot of travel before you feel any resistance? Do you have excessive freeplay at the top of the pedal? Happened to me years ago on a car I had in High School. Sold it because I couldn't figure out the problem. Duh, wish I had that 57 Chevy wagon back now. Check your clutch linkage for bends also. Hope this helps?:flag: :gmc:
