How far should I go on restoration?
 

I have a 68 3/4 ton pickup that I have taken the hood the fenders the doors and the bed off and had them sprayed with primer and I am getting the rust fixed on them. I still have the engine and the cab installed. What do you all think, should I take the cab off take the motor out and have the frame blasted and painted as well, along with the cab and engine bay? I know what I would do next and that is to rebuild the motor . The only major problem is I am not knowledgeable enough to take the motor out but I could pay a mechanic to do it and they'll cost me somewhere around $500-1000.
How far would you go on this?

If you've got the whole front clip off, then removing the engine is very simple...although you need a engine hoist and a good place to work....nothing but nuts and bolts.....and some wires...just mark where everything goes when your taking it apart...and take pictures for rememberizing....
How bad is the frame rust .....with a engine hoist pulling the cab is simple as well...you can Google engine hoist cab removal

Thanks Greg. I had the cab about 98% sanded and then my work exploded and I've been working way too much and I didn't get around to painting it with epoxy now I have flash rust. I'm planning on resanding it this Saturday and then hitting it with epoxy primer. Then I will probably decide on what to do with the motor. Getting winter time and I don't have a place inside to work on it.

I think I'm going to pull the motor, lift the cab and get it and the frame blasted. It's going to take longer and cost more than what I was expecting, but it will, in my mind, be done the right way.

^^ THIS ^^ is why my 68 project stalled.. couldn't force myself to not "do it right" now I have 51 GMC... NOT GETTING PAINTED

Agreed. Its a slippery slope. At the point that I decided to pull the cab, my project went from just getting the truck mechanically sound to a restoration and took me 6 years working on it weekends to get it back on the road. Not saying it would take you as long, just that there was something about committing to that much that made it tough to knowingly back off and say this or that is good enough.

I will say that now that its done, I'm happy I took things the (many) extra steps.
