Converting a 4x4 trans to 4x2

I have a chance to get a 2000 GMC 1500 4wd with a 5.3 and 4L60 trans for a really good deal. The frame is bent and the owner just wants it gone.

My question is what is involved with converting the trans to 2wd? OR would I be better off finding a 2wd trans and selling this one with the transfer case?

THis will be my first swap to a 5.3 into my son's 82 we are building....

You should just have to change the main shaft also known as output shaft to convert back to 2wd but a 2wd 4l60e should not be hard to find for cheap hopefully someone else can help

It is not that hard to swap the shaft if you need too.. Yesterday I swaped a 2wd shaft for a special 4wd shaft.

It can be done, but since this is your first swap, why complicate things? Find a good 2wd trans and spend your time and energy on the actual swap. Biting off too much on a first time project is a recipe for getting burned out on the project before completion. Just my $0.02.

^agree. If you were going to get a trans built, then it wouldn't really make a difference. You could just the new output shaft while its apart. Unless you find yourself needing a billet output shaft, finding a 2wd trans will prove easier.

Thanks guys. I do not think that I am biting off more then I can handle, heck the truck is all apart down to a bare frame. I just have a great deal in front of me for a complete running truck for cheap, but it is a 4wd. Once I have the truck and the stuff out, I will see what is needed. We are going to see how low we can keep the costs...

Let us know how you end up doing it. I just got a 4x4 4l60e on my donor and wondering about the same thing. I was in longview just yesterday too! If you take some pictures or find a good how to on the net I'd love to see it.

I don't have the truck yet, going to try to make the deal on Friday. If I get it, I will add what we do either here or for sure in my son's build thread...

When tearing a 4L60E down that far.............Stab a new case bushing & Check/Replace the 3-4 clutches.
