'71 K/20 Build Thread

Welcome :metal:

Here's my first build thread, I'll try to update it as much as I can.

Here's a little background on me and the truck.

I'm Andy, and I've had the truck since I was 8. Got it from some friends of ours in South Dakota. We go out there every year for vacation. They own a 13,000 acre cattle ranch, so all the trucks get dented and whatnot  Well the camshaft went out, and they parked it. One year, we were out there, and we said next year we'd bring a trailer out. At this point they wanted $1000 for it. So the next year comes around (2007), and we were explaining how it was for me and all that. They asked how much I had saved up ($450), and they sold the truck for that. Granted, it need the engine rebuilt, but we only had a couple hundred bucks in it. They also got a new transmission exhaust put in right before the cam went out.

So we parked it in the barn for a few months until we pulled the engine. Remember when the cam went out? They already had the new one in it  So we put put new bearings and new valvetrain in, and we put some Lingenfelter heads on that we had laying around. We also put a high volume oil pump in, and an Edelbrock Performer intake. Other than that, the engine is completely stock.

We haven't done bodywork yet, we're saving that for last. I'm planning on painting it the original Hugger Orange/white. Out of the $2000 we have in the truck, $1700 of it is out of my pocket. I'm a professional dishwasher

Alright, I've probably bored you enough now, here are some pics of it from a couple months ago.

Thank you :)
Shawn, too many to explain!

My signature has the engine details, and it has a Turbo 350 tranny.

The truck is mostly stock, and I don't plan on customizing it too much at all.

Today I pulled the steering wheel off and realigned it..it was 90 degrees off

Right now the clutch delete plate is drying, just pulled it off and repainted it.

You got a sweet deal on that truck! It is in very good shape to start. What shape are the floors, especially along the rocker panels?

71K20chevy 08-06-2012 08:12 AM

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread

Thanks!

Everything's great, just the usual rust at the bottom of the kick panel. The rocker panels have no rust though.

By the way, I checked out your build thread, very awesome truck :metal: 4 inch lift?

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread

Thank you also. That's great news on only a little rust. Thought mine was in decent shape rust wise until I took it apart. Ended up being a lot more work to replace all the rusted areas than I thought. Was worth it to me in the long run.

It is a Tuff Country lift kit and is suppose to only be a 2.5" lift but it is definitely closer to 3". Mainly wanted to lift the front up so it would sit more level.

"I'm a professional dishwasher" Go to school

Sits real nice! Looking good - it's a DELUXE model? Sandalwood floor mat, dash and steering column. DELUXE door panels.
You've even got the original DISK BRAKES sticker on the tailgate! :metal:

:c2: Welcome to the site

Thank you :)

Lite, I DO go to school! I'm 14 and I work on the weekends  The Sandalwood color is getting changed to black. I stole an NOS black dash pad off a guy for $50! Door panels, column, and floor mat will be black. Seat will probably be one of those that has the fold-down console.

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread

:chevy: Your truck, if it were mine I'd keep it as is (minus the seats, I'd replace with original bench). Nice score on the NOS dash pad. :metal:

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread

Thanks for the comments! I would like to do a stock bench, but I really want a center console. At first I was sold on Blazer seats. Then my dad said that if I had a chick riding with me, I wouldn't want her on the other side of the truck, which is a valid point....

So if I got the fold down console, you can go from buckets to bench almost instantly. But the thing is, I do like the original seats better. Buddy buckets aren't really an option, they'd cost too much to get done...I still have the original bench, but it needs new bottom foam and a cover.

Also forgot to say that from the same guy I got my dash pad from, he had a complete NOS tach cluster (all working gauges, good bezel) for $150! He had a new bezel for $50 (I realize I paid a little too much for that now), so I bought that, and then I got this with a little work:

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psaddb42eb.jpg

So that will be going in soon.

Right now the truck sits on jackstands getting new brakes, ball joints, steering components, etc. Glad I hoarded my money, it sure does disappear quickly

The guy at the brake place said, "Wanna know how to make a small fortune restoring an old truck? Start with a big fortune." Which is true
