91 gmc driver.
 

i sold my s blazer after my recent divorce. my 68 is on hold due to funds. i will be doing it RIGHT. i was on my way to look at s-10 pick up and bought this 91 gmc. 120k miles 4.3/3.08. 5 spd. good on gas useable. turns out the truck was 2 owner i know first owner. well maintained new gas tank and pump new starter, plugs wires cap rotor, new alt, tires and brakes less than 1000 mi. a/c cruise cassette. a little rusty but runs awesome and drives great.
i have:
1) welded in patch on left box side small patch rt side.
2) fixed a couple dings on hood.
3) fitted left cab corner.
4) bought sand blasted 8 inch ralleys. will paint them sat.
5) installed flowsound muffler (originaly for my kids s 10)
my goal is 2 inch springs and hanger/shackles in rear. same color paint. my 74 yr old dad (retired body man) is hangging out here during the day doing the filler work. my 20 yr old nephew will help with lowering.

Why the heck does those cab corners rust out? I just replaced both of mine, just put a coat of primer on the second one tonight. Good luck with the project.

Because of inadequate drainage in the original design. Water gets in around the back window, and sloshes around in the cab corner until it eats its way out. My truck has a little "Chevy lean" to it -- it leans just a little to the driver's side, because the gas tank is on that side. So the driver's side cab corner rusted out, but not the passenger side.

thanks. i did an 85 in 1994 that needed corners rockers and box sides. i figured i had 40 hrs in it made 3k on that one i am not selling this one. need a truck around might as well make it nice enough to enjoy it

i thought these would be better. this is the first one of this era i have done. there is actually like a "chamber" in there that fills with salt sprayed slime. i will be undercoating everything real well. and going the extra effort to butt fit and butt weld everything. that box patch was difficult to fit nicely. i took my time welding it to not warp it. the cab corner only took about an hour and a half to remove old and fit new. rockers should go quickly too.
with the 68 in the corner space is minimal. i think i am going to finish box paint it buff it and push it outside. before i remove doors and fenders.

I will be replacing my rocker panels soon. It will be the first time i have replaced rocker panels on a truck this year.

I still remember when i first got my 1991 i spent all my time hand sanding the truck.

center caps are stock came with wheels (got lucky they were gmc) cleaned silver paint off. with thinner and steel wool.

i had jobber mix pint of dbc only using course aluminum of the mixing bank. thought they might be too sparkley.

tear in seat. :( was covered by towel. other that that great. ac converted to 134 but in op. truck runs and drives like new. should be a good one. i bought a 90 new. it had same options and drive train 3.08 4.3 5 spd drove it to indy and got 26 mpg. not a hot rod but good user truck. i lived a few blocks from the original owner. he washed it weekly. takes good care of every thing he owns.

a quick update.... finally painted box and tailgate. seems i cant get enough time to work with all the other life things going on. i cheaped out and bought shopline base $138 a gallon. am using spi epoxy 2k primer and sealer. and their euro 2020 clear. I will NEVER use shopline again color is muddy and it took 5 coats to get full coverage. one gallon for whole truck wont be enough. i put 3 coats of base on let it sit 4 hrs then put one 2 more on let sit one hour then cleared. was afraid of solvent pop. i did get a bitt of pop on tailgate but i really laced the clear on it.

i couldnt post as lax so i signed up under new name i hope this isnt a problem admins. I revived the work on this truck. asked a friend who owns a shop to weld rockers and corners in. i replaced clutch master cyl slave cyl and line. it took 2 hrs alone to get the line wiggled in where it belonged. bleeding wasnt too hard. i let gravity work on it for half an hour or so then used a "mighty vac" vac pump to "push" fluid from slave. the truck started right up after charging battery sat for nearly 3 years. no knocks rattles or smoke. drove it with 2 bolts in each fender and no box 12 miles to Garys shop. he is really busy. i am wanting to put hangars and shackles in it. maybe leave shackles in 1" hole. do you guys think that bumper would be too low if i went 4 and put 2 "springs up front. i also want to color match 94 wt gmc grill leaving center black.

since the small side of the garage is empty, (i dropped my truck off at a friends shop to have him pot rockers and corners in it., my welder is broken) i ordered a 94-98 gmc "work truck" grille. i spent the time to paint it. i wrangled with leaving center black or doing it silver. i have some silver left from the wheels so silver it is. scuff, adhesion promoter. spi epoxy. i let epoxy dry overnight. i then sprayed silver with hardener, to help adhesion,on grill. let silver dry overnight. i then masked the silver off and sprayed the red. while the red dried we went grocery shopping. came back and cleared with spi 2020 euro clear. SMOOTH the gun i used came in a $99 kit dad gave me. pain in the a$$ 1.0 tip doesnt put much paint out but it is small stuff.

5 years later i am re energized. front fenders primed. need to block today flip over epoxy paint inside. cab needs a re-block re-prime. and paint. in the mean time i have lowered the truck with shackles and hangars. drop spindles in the front. it will be nice to crise around at 20 mpg. 4.3 is a good engine.
