292 L6 carb. questions

Hi all. I'm looking for some recommendations on my 292. Right now it's bone stock with out a rebuild (for now) I have headers on the way but I'm wondering what I should be doing on the breathing side. Intakes for these things are almost all the same so I'm gona go with Clifford. But I want good gas mileage. I was thinking about progressive carbs. or maybe a 2 bbl or 4bbl. This truck is gona be a daily driver but when I put my foot all the way it in it I want it to turn this thing on instead of gasping for breath with the 1 bbl currently on it. Any ideas / recommendations would be great. Thanks!

I have done alot of reading on these as I have one too. It's my understanding that the OFFY intake(offenhauser) 4bbl is better on the street than the clifford. Also go with the Holley 390 or Edelbrock 500. Check out webrodder.com Read the build-up of "Six Pack to go" Very nice 292 build up. I am planning on something VERY similar. Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to use the clifford rebuild kit. I guess I'm leaning towards the Edelbrock 500. Does anyone seem to have any good links besides stovebolt for these things.. maybe someplace to get parts too? I'm still slightly clueless on the L6 but hope to get educated. Thanks!

Must be nice to live where you don't need mainfold heat to keep the gas atomized.

the Clifford manifold with water heat is best for the colder climates. I've heard the Offy is better unless you neeed the heat.

After having both installed, I'd go back to the Offy if I weren't trying to sell my truck. You'll get good results with either however.

I'm running a 292, bored .030 over, with an Offy intake and Clifford Research headers. Carb is an Edelbrock 1404, manual choke, 500 CFM Performer [AFB type]. No carb heat, I live in Tucson, AZ.

Re: 292 L6 carb. questions

Thanks everyone for helping me out. Here in New Mexico it does get cold just later and for not at long.. (it is a desert. ;) ) If anymore of you L6 guys on here have any ideas for an engine build or recommendations I'm all ears. Thanks again!
