I just put in the "Fatmat" in last night. I did my firewall, floor, back cab wall, cab corners, all inside the doors, and still have enough to do a second layer on my firewall and still have a little left over... I started with 100sqft'

whats the fatmat go for..
I've seen alot of cars/trucks use the bed liner in the interior

Re: sound deadener

Looking at the picture of the summit stuff, it appears to be some type of fiber insulation. That would make it good for a firewall and perhaps for the roof or a backing on door panels but likely not great for floor boards or any other wear or traffic areas... still probably better than the silver bubble wrap stuff ;)

I used Second Skin Damplifier Pro. Good stuff also.

Is the original firewall insulation left in place and these materials installed over it, or is it removed?

Re: sound deadener

Reading all I have read says you should have clean sheet metal. If you put it over the old firewall insulation, at some point it's going to fall away from the firewall.

I did a search on ebay and found what is supposed to be fatmat with no logo on it for 124.00 (including shipping) for 100 sq ft. from user sounddeadenerdiscounts. I still have 50 sq ft left after doing the inside of the cab. I still have the doors and possibly the underside of the hood to do.

Question: Does it make sense to do the underside of the hood? Any pros or cons to it?

I used something call cool-tec I think it was called just like dynamat but a a cheaper price I found it here locally at a performance shop and it works awesome....

Re: sound deadener

I used dyna mat in my bb truck and just cut into small squares and placed it in hollow places- doors, rear of cab, around rear light etc. I just installed fatmat in the same fashion in my 4x4 yesterday and could tell an immediate difference just tapping on the various sheet metal sections. I can only imagine what an entire cab would be like with this stuff. It sounds very solid and not "tinny" with just what I did . Get the fat mat off ebay you can get it cheaper there if you shop.

I reckon if these old trucks had this stuff installed when they were built, with all the rainwater leaks that they developed over the years there wouldn't be a solid cab floor in the country today. I'll stick with the old fashioned underlay, I can remove that stuff and dry the whole thing out if need be before the damage is done....JMO.

I used from Mc Master-Carr, #9709T39 Sound and Vibration Damping Sheet EVA Mastic, .079" Thick, 32" X 54". Then cover it with #9367K65
Foil-Faced Bubble Wrap Insulation 36" Wide, 25 ft Roll Length.
I used 3m spray adhesive for the insulation sheet.
All of this is a damn site cheaper than the "brand X" stuff.

My $.02

does it work good? does the heat of the floor cause anty trouble?

69sixpackbee 10-25-2010 07:39 PM

Re: sound deadener

No problems whatsoever. I used the mastic inside of the doors and put the insulation under the panels. I also put some under the headliner and any other areas that needed dampening. The "other" brands just are a sound deadener but I needed insulation as well but I guess you could always put the insulation on that stuff as well without complication.

This truck is as quiet as a Lexus :)

Did you put the bubble wrap stuff on the floor? Seems you wouldn't for obvious reasons - it would pop(?)

Does the Fatmat stuff only kill sound or does it insulate against heat too? I am wondering if two layers under foot would help for heat in my '46 or if I need to use a different product for that?

Strut 10-25-2010 08:55 PM

Re: sound deadener

Has anyone used Lizard Skin Coatings? I had planed to use this not only for sound deadening but to seal up all the seams in the floor.... It can be sanded and painted over too.

The bubble wrap IS on all surfaces. It does not pop. It is encapsulated between two layers of reflective mylar and the bubbles themselves are much firmer and smaller than the usual shipping stuff.

I used window wrap on my dd available at local lumber yards 30.00 per roll. I have used the same roll under 2 floormats and still have a little left.

I used Lizard Skin all over interior of cab, then Second Skin Damplifier Pro over the Lizard Skin on floor, I'm very pleased with the performance, both as a heat blocker & sound deadener.

Curious cause i'm not a body man, if i decide to use the stuff and down the road a rust problem pops up because it was hidden inside a rocker or cab support, how hard it it to remove the stuff you use? can it be media blasted off? Thanks,

Re: sound deadener

I'm curious as to what some of you are doing with the exposed areas of the sound deadener? Like up front on the firewall where the carpet ends. Is the stuff paintable or do you make sure you have something to cover it all up?

Re: sound deadener

I have experience with just about every deadener out there. My advice is stay away from anything tar based. The only two that in my opinion are even worth buying is FatMat's MegaMat or Second Skin Damplifier. They're both Butyl and work 10x better than anything else out there. The tar based stuff easily peels off and in some cases the smell of the tar lingers in the car forever. If you're going to deaden, do it right. FatMat MegaMat is the cheaper of the two (100 sq. ft. for $240) and works very well. I have about 130 sq. ft. in my cab along with a layer of Second Skin's Luxury Liner Pro. It's about as quiet as a new luxury car.

Butyl based is the only way to go.

Edit- as for the spray stuff I have never used any but really want to. Everyone I know that has used it says it's excellent stuff.

Good point - except in a lot of areas of the country, we either don't get much rain (like here), the truck is garaged, or it isn't driven in the rain. If it is, then it's probably a daily driver, and you're a little less picky about how it looks in the long run.

What's the best for Heat AND Sound insulation?

When the air temp is 115 out here the asphalt is usually 150...

Hoping to keep the truck semi-coool.

Nova70 10-27-2010 04:54 AM

Re: sound deadener

That would require a two step process. The sound deadener does just what it says, reduces sound. For some insulation you would want to go with some second heat wave or a similar product.

Heat Wave Pro

I would still like to know if any of the products listed are easy to remove if you end up having a hidden rust issue rear its ugly head? by sander or maybe heat gun?
