700r4 Lock up test
Seems like my lockup solenoid gave up the will to work . I have a TCI lockup kit in it been working great I have a lighted dash switch installed along with the vacum switch, light would be on when un-locked below 50 mph above 50 the light would go out and watch the tach drop 200 RPM. Or I could lock it up with the switch in 3 or 4 never tried in 2nd. Comming home Sat night the rocker switch stayed lit all the way to 80 if I threw the switch the rpms never changed light would go off but no drop in the rpms.Tried it again this afternoon no differant any way to test the solenoid with out dropping pan?Trans was rebuilt 2 years ago abd it shifts great only problem is the lockup.

Re: 700r4 Lock up test
The electrical coil can be good, Pass an Ohm & Amperage test & still not mechanically work.
You can check the coil windings with a Voltage or Ground return through the solenoid. (Depends on how it's wired) I use 4L60E TCC Enable Solenoids with great success.....Not so much with aftermarket replacements. |

Re: 700r4 Lock up test
The TCC Enable solenoid works in all previous 700R4 & 4L60 units. You're thinking of the TCC PWM Solenoid. Sold as part of the 4L60E internal harness.
I use USED ones off otherwise junk 4L60E harnesses. |
Re: 700r4 Lock up test
I put the test leads on the outside of case, green and red wire 25 ohms ,so your saying it still could be no good.
|
Re: 700r4 Lock up test
25 ohms sounds good. This a normally open solenoid. It vents the fluid until energized then the little check ball inside seats and blocks the fluid. So electrically it could be ok and the mechanical check ball fail to seat. Or the hydraulic valve in front of it fails to move.

Re: 700r4 Lock up test
So why the 4L60 E solenode is it heavy duty
|
Re: 700r4 Lock up test
The 4L60E solenoid does have a filter in the snout, It may help with longevity?
The check ball is also spring loaded, So even if the Magnetic Field is weak, The spring will help the check ball seat. The fact is.....I have the best luck with 4L60E solenoids.....Whatever that's worth? Most 700R4/4L60 replacement solenoids are Chicom crap. If you could find a NOS Delco solenoid that passes a bench pressure test.....You'd probably be fine for many years! |
Re: 700r4 Lock up test
OK Thanks for the info , Something screwy going on maybe a ground issue I ground it to the side of case like TCI showed in the instructions. Ran a new vacum hose tonight and made sure I had a solid 12 volts (YEP).Took it for a drive and it worked good for a couple times ,then it wouldn't lock up then it would very intermittent .Trans has less than 300 miles has never skipped a beat ,ground wire still looks and feels solid .:cuss:

Re: 700r4 Lock up test
The solenoid could have a weaker magnetic field when it gets hot, Or the coil could go completely open with heat.
I've been there & have several T-shirts!!! A low amp clamp & a scope would prove out my theory. Or disprove it & you could still have a mechanical issue with the solenoid. As Bigdav points out...You could have TCC valve sticking, But I doubt it given the symptoms. |
Re: 700r4 Lock up test
I 'll snag a TCC sillynoid in the next day or 2 and see if it cures the problem Thanks for the info much appreciated:metal:

Re: 700r4 Lock up test
So checked the ground and all that did a road test ,50 mph locks up slow to 49 unlocks back to 50 + no lock back down to 40 + locks up. Punched it to down shift to 3rd and eased out of throttle it locked up in 3rd. Solonoid should be here to day.Any way to test press. switch? but I'm thinking thats not it because it shfits exactly like it suppose to
