Wheel and tire size????
 

If you cut out the wheel wells in the bed of your truck , what is the largest tire and wheel combo that will fit with out rubbing the springs? I would also like to know the wheel backspacing and pics if you have them. Thanks in advance

Had to read this twice to get the point. You meant the inner wheel arch, in the bed. My mind, which is medically proven to be damaged, first thought of someone who would enlarge the wheel opening. Sorry. I went the wrong way with it.

If you're laying frame, with no tubs in the bed....who knows how large it could be?

I don't mean tubbed, just factory setup with fender wells enlarged?

Probably about 16"-20" wide before you hit the springs.

You are refering to the wheel houses,right?
Now,what do you mean by factory set-up?Isn`t the factory set-up having the wheelhouses in place?And,when you remove them to modify,are you saying you`ll leave them open slinging debri everywhere or would you cover them which is tubbed?
Do you have coil or spring or other?

Yes, the wheel houses. By factory I mean stock lenghth of axle, not narrowed and stock suspension. I will cover it back up, by piecing two wheel housings together, to make one. I am also running coil springs. Thanks

If your plan is to remove, then widen and reinstall the wheelhouses, then you will be able to see, and measure while they're out. You will be the one who can see what will happen.

You aren't going to narrow the rear axle, so it's gonna come down to what you see and how much room you have. Doing it yourself will provide you with the info you need and will take away a "he said I could use yada, yada, yada" from the process. I'm not trying to be anal about it, but what you seem to want for info is something that I think you would be in the best position to determine.

I'm running 275-60x15's on my 4-inch lowered coil-spring rear end on 10-inch wide wheels with a 5-inch backspace. There are no issues with the tires coming into contact with anything, yet. They've been on there for the past three years, although not the last year. Since my truck is a '69, the rear axle is an inch narrower than the '70-72. If you have leaf springs, there will be differences in comparison.

I was just trying to get some idea, before I do it. I was just wondering if someone has done this and what they are running, and if it is even worth the time and effort.

Just jack the truck up, remove a wheel and measure from the spring to the drum face.

I did a back 1/2 job on a truck,not what you want to do.But,these trucks allow quite a bit of tire w/o frame work once the wheel houses are taken out of the equation.Coils allow a couple inches more than springs.Sorry I don`t have an specific info.But,go check the WIW forum or dog68chevy`s thread.I think his truck isn`t narrowed and he`s got big meat on there.You could shoot him a pm.

Well honestly what size are you looking for? I run 13" wide dot approved dirt track tires with stock wheel wells. They look plenty large without going for the pro-street look. coil springs also. (the 13" is section width not tread width) thought I should add that.

Im running 305/40/23 with 1/2 inch spacers not sure on backspace will try to check tomorrow. Haven't dropped it yet wanna go 2in in back. May not be able to drop front hace 285/40/23 in front. Rides fine only rubbed going up hills in angles thats why i got the spacers

Sorry for the delay... Hey I have my box off because I am shaving the whole truck and repainting it but here are some photos of the tires. The rims on the back are 10" so the tread width might be a little wider with a 12" rim. I attached a photo of my shaved drip rails too:metal:

my dad (1968SWBBigBlock) is running a 32in by 18.5in wide tire on the rear, wouldnt fit with stock springs, but i'm pretty sure the truck has chevelle springs in the rear but all thats been done is widened wheels basically mini-tubbed.

Do not know if you are still working on this, but I have somw what of an answer. I am doing to mock on my 67 now and I have the 315/60/15 MT Drag Radial underneath it.

I cut the inner lip out of the bed and moved it back and added about 4 1/2 inches in the stock fenderwell, which puts it about even with the frame. I think I still had about 5-6 inched toward the inside

There is quite a bit of room in these trucks. Hope this helps a little.
