Any 6.2 NA guys on here?
 

I have other chevy trucks, but we are buying a 83 K2500 burb with a 6.2 and 700. Been sitting for about 10 years. Fluid in the trans looks new and the glow plug relay cycles when you turn the ignition on. Not ready to start it, any pre-start checks or anything you can think of on the detroit before we do?

I would pull a couple plugs and make sure they actually glow. Cooking oil spray is a great starter aid, but whatever you do, do not use ether/other starting fluid. First starts on an unknown fuel system, sometimes I run a 2 liter bottle IV hanging from hood, just to make sure it will start, 6.2 dont like air in the fuel.

I'm honestly surprised the glowplug switch works, the 82-84 system wasn't very reliable. But anyway, hard to say how good the fuel is but I've started a 6.5 on 10 year old fuel before. I would personally run a line off the firewall mounted filter into a jerry can to be sure. You may need to do some air bleeding so be prepared to use a battery charger and DO NOT use starting fluid. And check oil level obviously.

First make sure fuel comes out of the bleed valve on the primary filter, once that's good, you may need to crack one of the lines on the secondary filter behind the intake until no air comes out. Then crack a few injector lines and see if you have fuel dribbling out while cranking, if yes, you're ready to start. Also note, since you'll be doing the bleeding by cranking due to having only a mechanical lift pump, be sure to give the starter a rest and only do 10-15 second max cranks, especially if it's an original direct drive starter. Check to make sure the front starter brace is in place also so you don't break the ear off the block and/or ruin the bolt threads.

My truck sat for 9 years, I put 2 batteries in it, cranked it up, and drove it on the trailer.

Yes the 82-84 glow plug relay is not very reliable, but it is very simple to change it over to the 85-93 relay. Also if you have to change glow plugs, I would go with Delco 60G plugs. You will have to extend glow time, but they are self limiting, so they won’t burn out.

I can provide info on the 85-93 relay swap and extending the glow plug time if you would like

Yes, I run NA 6.2s Very Dependable, Not made for HP... But will get your 20 mpg + on Freeway set at 60-65 maybe 70. Depending on Gearing etc.

Thankfully the 6.5L is just a Bored out 6.2, So the Cylinder Heads, Intake, etc Interchanges... And a Turbo will work on it too. But i think you have to delete A/C Box.
