'62 Needs sound
 

I have a 62:gmc2: with a stock radio, and dont want to get rid of it. is there any way I could put a new deck in a hidden place, and keep the old radio in the stock place? also, I want it to be clean sound too, but have no room for subs without moving the gas tank, which I cant do? any ideas?

Glove box is an option. A good deck and some good speakers make a huge difference without going crazy, but don't expect a ton of bass without a sub.

Speakers in the rear corner, in the doors, in the kick panels, in the dash. Depending on how much you want to make and what you are willing to cut into.

You can fit a 6" Bazooka tube in the cab.... Mine is standing on end in the rear of the cab, passenger side next to the tank.

and as far as cutting goes, I would prefer not to cut much, but doors aren't a problem. Definately not the dash though.

Actually given the small confines of our trucks it does a pretty good job, when wired properly using a good amp.

You should be able to pick up a passive (non powered) 6" Bazooka tube for under $100.

You mean how much power does it need?

Don't get stuck on the "How much power I have" thing.... its not needed to get a good sounding system.
I have 2 6.5" Bostons in the forward portion of my doors and 2 6"x9" Polks in the rear of the doors along with this sub. The sub is run by an Alpine 2 channel amp bridged to the sub and the speakers are powered by a Kenwood 4 channel amp (I think 30 watts per channel) and it is plenty for the small confines of our trucks.

As I recall the tube I have has a max input of 100 watts.

I was planning on going with two alpine 6x9's, a sub of some sort, alpine deck, alpine amps, and two alpine 6.5" in kick panels in the forward corners. I definately think the tube is a good idea, I have a large group of friends that rave about them. Can I still use the stock radio and speakers, for am radio, and then the alpine deck for anything else?

I don't see any reason why the stock radio and dash mounted speakers would stop working if you installed an aftermarket deck in the glove box etc.. unless you disconnected the original one.

In my truck the tank is more centered towards the drivers side which allows enough room for this to fit.

Other than the deck in the dash most people wouldn't even know it had a stereo let alone amps, changer and sub.

I have the amps mounted under the seat on the drivers side and the changer is under the passenger side.

I am far from, and never profess to be an expert on audio but I feel that a clean install with quality wiring is more beneficial than huge amounts of power and crappy installation.
On our trucks getting rid of the "tinny" sound from all the metal interior is paramount. I am planning many updates to the interior as I go through the restoration process and while the basic system will stay in place I am going to change the mounting in the doors and replace some wiring (this system was installed in 1998) and the speakers.
I found that it was much less hassle to install the system when I had the seat out and installing the carpet kit.

Glad to be of help.

You don't have to go broke buying quality audio stuff. Crutchfield has an outlet store that you can score deals on stuff that is open box or ???
You can also check your local best by (used to be one off Briggsmore if I remember correctly) for deals, sales or open box stuff.

I am switching to Infinity Kappa speakers for the 6"x9"s and 6.5" Kappa separates. I will upgrade the amps at a later date as needed.

Good luck, the tube is a tight fit but it does indeed fit. The older model Bazooka fit better as the case was a bit smaller.

You should be able to pick one up for a hell of a lot less than that. Watch your local Craigslist.
