Which S10 style is lighter?

The older style or the newer style. I am thinking about getting an extended cab for a DD. My thoughts as of now are to put in a 5.3l 4l60e combo with a 3.42 or higher gear for mileage. I am doing a frame off on an 85 C10 short bed and just bought an 84 K30 one ton 4x4 and need something to else to drive daily.

I like both styles of S10's. I like the older ones for their style and simplicity but also like the newer style for the comfort and also their style too.

Yeah lighter in weight. I have heard of guys getting better than 20mpg with a 4.8 or 5.3 swap. I thought the small v8 would produce decent mpg's in an S10.

I get around 20 mpg. in my 92 with a 5.3- 700 R4 and 3:42 gears. But I have to keep my foot out of it because I can spin the 275/60-15's real easy. I live driving my truck and have a lot of fun watching people when they see it.

1st gens are lighter, but not by much. 2nd gens obviously have the aerodynamic advantage, which would be my choice for a swap. A 5.3 is the way to fly, if it's between the 4.8 and 5.3.

My 4.3/700r4 first gen, knocks down 22mpg with relative ease.

My '89 long bed with 4.3 seems to get even better mileage than my 1.7L 6-cylinder '67 Corvair, which gets in the low 20s. According to the the 1989 Chevrolet S-10 Restoration Package, the '89 longbed (fleetside) weighs between 3662 and 4930 lbs gross. Mine has the 4.3 so probably weighs 4930 lbs. That's TWICE what my Corvair weighs. Not too shabby, IMO. I also have to stay off the throttle on dead-starts or the tire will spin. It's very touchy from idle/stop, but great once the truck gets rolling. Seems like the 4.3 engine is about perfect for this little truck.

GVWR is different than curb weight.

A second gen ecsb 4x4 weighs in at 3600lbs. So you're no where near 4900lbs.

My 2000 s-10 4WD W/ 4.3 5-speed manual gets 22 mpg highway. Good daily driver & fun to drive with the 5-speed.

Haven't actually measured the mileage, but pretty sure my '89 S10 2WD long bed 4.3/auto gets at least 22 mpg. Very happy with it so far!

I had a 86 with a 4.3 that got 18mpg and removed it and put in a 5.7 tbi and got 19 MPG, had a chip burned and that changed from 19 to 25!. The main difference was the tune in the chip. Then after that I put in a alum headed 383 stroker with dual tbi's and it all started going backwards mainly because I stayed up on the revchip or close most of the time it was so fun!!Oh by the way it was a extra cab and weighed about 3400LBS with a tank of gas and had 3;42's.jim ps. yes I am aware that they did not put a 4.3 in a 86 truck so don't flame me for that. I built this one from frame up, building the truck I wanted at that time
