Clear coat truck prep
I want to scuff my truck, touch in a couple small spots and then put a coat of new clear coat over the whole truck. My question is, what is the safest and finest grit I can use to scuff the truck down with that the new clear will adhere to. Thanks.

Re: Clear coat truck prep
I’ve dry sanded with 900 on a orbital and had no issues. Wet with 1000 will be fine as well. Is your truck clear coated already?

Re: Clear coat truck prep
Yes, had a well known body shop put a new b/c paint job on it a couple years back. Even though I specifically asked to leave it as it came out of the spray gun, that’s not what I got. He wet sanded and buffed it. It looks great in the shade. In the sun, there are deep buffing swirls all over the truck. I do body work and paint as a hobby, but was laid up at the time with health issues so I had him do it. I’ve since tried every which way and every suggestion to try and remove the swirls. They just aren’t coming out. I want to scuff and put one good coat of clear over it and be done. I can paint, it will look good. I have just never done this and wasn’t sure what I could get away with for wet sanding and still have enough tooth for the new clear to adhere to.

Why not just cut it with 1000 grit and polish it back out? There should be plenty of clear on to do it.

Re: Clear coat truck prep
You should look at the tech sheet for whatever clear you're planning to use. If it were me, I would use SPI Universal Clear and sand with 600 prior. I know it costs more, but you should do two coats. That will give you peace of mind that you have good mil thickness and in case you ever want to cut & buff yourself you have enough.

Re: Clear coat truck prep
I would try buffing again maybe go with a more aggressive compound or pad.
Make sure you change pads when you go to the lighter compounds Good luck |
Re: Clear coat truck prep
Wet DA it with 3m 300 grit trizact and buff it again
