Removing transfer case from transmission
 

I thought this would be an easy task, since both are out of the truck. I remove the bolts holding the transmission to the transfer case and I can slide it out about 1 inch and then it stops. I just wanted to make sure I am not missing something before I go breaking something. Is there a trick to removing this?

All the stickshifts I have been around just came apart. I think the T350 adapter only comes apart one way. If you list what you are working on someone may have an answer for you.

What tranny and what t-case? NP205's mated to an SM465 will come right apart, but the NP205 is a cast iron tank, so be careful.

Sorry. I meant to put what tranny. Its a 3 speed, manual. I tried again, but it wont go past about that 1"

I was able to get it out. I had to use a 2x4 for some leverage, and was able to persuade it out with a few taps from a hammer onto the 2x4.

It is the NP205 TC, I'm not sure which tranny though? Also, what does that 195 mean for Ratio?

Looks like a Saginaw 3 speed from here. I'd need to see the side cover to be positive.

1.95 is the low range ratio. In other words twice as low as high range. Most newer aluminum cases are around 2.72:1 reduction.

Now that I'm ready to put the trans and transfer case back together, where in the heck to I find that gasket? No one local has it, and the only place I found online is here for $17.39. I can live with paying the $17.39 for a piece of cardboard, but the cheapest shipping is almost $10 bringing the total to over $27. Seems a little steep for a gasket

Are there any other places that sell these that someone here hopefully knows of?

Permatex is all I have ever used on a 4spd adapter.

RTV or get out a razor and cut your own.....

in school we used cereal boxes n a ballpen hammer to make them on small engines. hammer lightly taps out the outline then you cut it out.

Ok. Looks like I'll attempt a home made recipe. I guess it should work ok. Not like there is any pressure build up that could cause a leak

That reminded me of one my buddy did. He was driving a semi and the air compressor blew a head gasket. He coasted into a truck stop. The only thing they had to make a head gasket out of was a box of Crispy Creames. That rig made better air than its companion truck and was still rocking the donut gasket 2 years later.

yep cardboard box gaskets do last, other odd thing we learned and used was business cards to set mag to flywheel air gap and points.

1 for air gap, 2 for setting points. since their thicknes was uniform, even though we had feeler gauges in our tool boxes.

The teacher thoought outside the box on his lessons ;)

I used to use a match book for the points. In the 80s the covers got a little thicker and you had to find a thinner cover. Slide it around a little and it would even clean the contacts a little bit. Tricks of the old trade.

Was simple enough. Made my own gasket out of card stock that I had lying around. I hope it's heavy enough to hold up
