brake booster recommendations
So I've been shopping for brake booster w/ master cylinder and prop valve combos and i'm seeing a lot of mixed reviews of the CPP and POL units. Leaking, poor fit, wrong rod, etc. Read a few good things about Tuff Stuff. Anybody have recommendation on direct replacement???
Truck is a 72 with factory power disc/drum. Old unit was leaking and I have literally replaced every single brake component on the entire truck, booster is my last piece. Also, whats the difference between delco and bendix boosters? Do I get single or dual diaphram? stock 11" booster? I dont really want to drop 500 on a wilwood unit but they sure get great reviews |

Howdy Snake, when one of my 72's blew a diaphragm I took unit to an Oreilly's. The difference between a Delco and Bendix unit is in the stamped design of the case. Cant go wrong if you just match the design and diameter of the existing unit. I dont remember which one because it's been years, but i do remember the replacement unit will look exactly like the one that's blown. Pretty sure there's a core charge involved.

Dual diaphragm is more powerful than single and used on 3/4 ton trucks. Some people choose to use them on their 1/2 tons but they are physically larger and possibly uglier to some eyes.

x3 go to O-Reilly's with old booster and have them match it up. Dual diaphragm is best.

Get the biggest booster you can. I bought the 9" for my impala from CPP with the combo valve and master cylinder and am disappointed with the braking assist during the second application of the brakes. the first is fine, but an immediate again requires more pedal effort. AND when I first got it, the check valve was bad.

You also need to consider if you want the goldish factory style finish or if black is good. I am pretty sure I bought the Tough Stuff unit and it works fine. I am only running about 10.5 inches of vacuum and the pedal is a little stiff but not that noticeable.

Thanks for the info guys, are the original bendix or delco units dual diaphram? Or was that 3/4 ton trucks? The way I understand it, delco are gold cad which I prefer, bendix are black, is this right? I know they have different patterns on the booster and I have my original in storage currently, so I'll have to look at it.
Leaning towards a tuff stuff or right stuff 11" delco style, are they a direct swap with bendix units if thats what I originally had? I have not had the truck running yet since getting the motor built, mild 383 but the cam has 108 LSA so I hope it produces enough vacuum. Or I'll need to hit the squat rack and leg press a little more... |
