I don't remember ever seeing a thread on this but I love to hear stories of how you found your truck so post them up with then and now pics.

I'll start by saying I first saw mine at our local Easter Weekend indoor car show in 1997/1998 and then in 2001 it was sitting on the street at our local late summer Cruise Weekend with a for sale sign in the window. First pic is at the 97/98 car show and second are from 2001 when I bought it

Seen it around town and then spotted it with a for sale sign on the edge of the highway.

Found mine on CL. Saw an ad for a 68 and called the number, turns out it was just 3 blocks away. Bolted the bed on and drove it home.

Found mine locally on CL. Owner got it when his uncle died and they liquidated his farm/estate in North Carolina. It is the farm truck which had sat in an old barn covered & forgotten for 25 years.

Found mine at Barton's Chevrolet in Yorba Linda, CA, mid-November 1969 as a leftover new 1969.

Here is a copy/paste of my very first thread.. Tells my little story :)

Hello everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself and share my little story, I am also looking for any advice about the truck I am about to buy/trade so please chime in..

The wife and I have always talked about restoring an old pick up but we did not have a garage to put one so when we broke ground on a new garage I went running, looking for a new toy to bring home, I checked ebay, craigslist, local papers etc etc either finding trucks too nice or too ratt'ed. Feeling defeated I had just decided to start looking for a classic car instead thinking that might be easier to locate then this past week on the way home from the store, about 2 miles from my house this GMC was parked on someone's lawn.. brakes slammed, tire screeched, grocery's flew all over the mini van.. I checked out the truck and it looked pretty good, Wrote down the email address needed to contact the current owner, cleaned up the grocery's and headed home to get to the computer.
I walked in the house, put the groceries on the counter and headed directly to the computer as I bee lined it to the computer my wife asked me "why is the bread a mangled mush?" I muttered something like "Mush,Truck, computer, washing machine, pinball, fish" she said " I think I heard truck and that explains it".
After emailing the owner I was able to strike a deal.. He was asking 3500.00 cash.. we agreed on $2500 cash and 2 dump truck loads of un-split firewood (which I happen to have and don't need) I also had to promise to take care of the truck and not chop it,drop it or anything like that. Which is an easy promise as my only intention for this truck is to restore to original.. So there it is.. My little story of how I found the truck I will pick up this Wednesday..
According to the current owner the truck runs strong but the starter sticks and has been sitting for a year.. is there anything I should be looking for with this truck?? any heads up?? or weak spots?? The owner seems not to know much about these trucks and not much info to contribute,, he thought it had a 296 but after I pulled the engine casts it looks like to be a 250CI (4.1 liter) built in Oct of 67.. Any info/advice would be great.. Scott (soon to be proud owner of a 68 GMC 2500 LWB flareside Custom WOOT!!)

Took a 3 hour drive one way to look at a 67 swb 4x4. Passed my 71 swb 4x4 on the way to look at the 67. The 67 was beyond ruff and he wanted a Barrett Jackson price for it. On the way home, I stopped and looked at the 71 and ended up buying it.

I found my current one on Craigslist. Called on it but the guy never returned my call. Bought my blue truck and the very next night after I got it home, the guy called back (2-3 weeks later). Told a buddy about it and he bought it to flip. After him teasing me with pics and weeks of it not selling, I drove down to his place and struck a deal. Bought it, got it home and sold my other truck.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

Winters are long and cold in Northern Michigan so I was looking at the Southern California CL for a solid truck. I have a friend that lives outside of Long Beach and I always told him I was going to bring one of these classics home. I found an ad for my truck and it was about a mile away from my friend. He took pictures for me and helped me with the sale transaction. I flew out there, did some pre-trip maintenance and did Route 66 back home to Michigan. No Air, no radio, no cruise for 2,500 miles. Crazy, but fun!

Found mine on this site, it was a CL add that someone had posted up, only problem was it was on the west coast and I was on the east coast. But I had a friend that was a trucker and he just happened to be in Cali at that time. Made all the arrangements and got him to hall it back east for me.

It was spring of 1977. I'd been looking for a 4x4 but hadn't found the right one yet. Drove past the Chevy lot one day and there it sat, freshly traded in and hadn't been detailed yet (just the way I like it, so I can see what condition everything is really in).

A couple of years ago I was looking for an older
(50s to 72) chevy/gmc truck to work on and fix up when I retired. Boy what a lot of junk here in the north east, but with high dollar prices. One day on the way home from doing a little shopping I saw this truck in the high school parking lot FOR SALE!!! I made a quick U turn, looked it over and couldn't believe the shape it was in, I didn't even have to work on it to drive it! I raced home to call the phone number that was in the windshield, went to look at it with the owner and tried to dicker with him but he wouldn't budge, so even though I felt the price was a little on the high side I bought it any way. I'm happy I did. This is a picture the day I picked it up......

Craigslist. It was the third truck I called about. About 20 miles from home, guy had been collecting trucks and parts and never did anything with them, so he was selling them off. He had 5 67-72's in various condition, I grabbed the only shortbed and the only one that ran.

I had recently been divorced and was sitting on the couch trying to figure out what to do with myself. I decided it was time to get a new set of wheels. First thing that popped into my head was a 67-72 C10. I jumped on CL and sure enough found a 67 SWB "running and driving" for $700. I called the guy and he still had it. I had to drive out to Cumberland Co. to a Saw Mill and there it was on the edge of the woods out on the back 40. I look over it, heard it chug, saw it move about two feet so I told the guy I'd take it. You should have seen the look on his face when he asked me what I was going to do with it and I responded "Drive it". Priceless. Several months later he delivered a 68 SWB to me and couldn't believe it when he saw it out on the street with tags on it. I managed to get one of the photos from the CL ad.

My Brother-in-law passed a few years ago and had a passion with 67-72 trucks. He always drove these trucks... His truck was left for dead... Nobody wanted to take it and it was going to get towed to the junk yard... I took it had have been working on it for several years... as a hobby as I am no way a mechanic.. Here is a pic of the day we brought the orphan home...

wife in the background does not look thrilled.... now the little truck has a spot in the garage and her car is now in the driveway

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

My first was when I was 17 and I bought it off a guy I worked with. It was a 72 gmc 350- automatic with ps pb. Engine was toast so I put in a salvaged engine and drove it for a few years then stupidly sold it when other projects came into the picture. Years passed as I drifted out of the automotive scene and my uncle emailed me pictures of a 68gmc truck he bought to drive around in.
I simply said if it's ever for sale I'd be interested. Couple years passes and I get word the truck is just been sitting not driven much,he's not mechanically inclined at all and the truck was just too frustrating for him. So I offered to buy it off him and that was that. We cut a deal on the phone and I made the 6 hour drive to his house to retrieve the truck.

The drive home wasn't too bad other than the terrible brakes and it getting a paltry 10 mpg out of the 292 6er.

Bought mine in the summer of 88. Working in the parts department at local Olds dealership and one of the wholesaler guys stopped by to see what had been traded and had driven it there. I'm technically the second owner of my 72.

Mine was staring at me a few blocks from my new house with a wheel in the dirt for about a year. I tracked the guy down, struck a deal, jumped started her with my little Sentra, pumped up the tire and took a spin. I fell in love, traded cash for title, and have been wrenching, cruising, and hauling ever since.

Bought mine from my uncle in 1982. He had bought a F@%£ and didn't need this one any more. I believe he always wanted it back.
