1970 Short Step Wheel/Tire Size

I have a 1970 short Stepper. I'm wanting to keep it stock height. 6 bolt all the way around. I have drum rear and McGaughys C10DBKIT up front. I do NOT want to tub it. I have coil, not springs What it the widest rim tire combo I can fit in the rear. With what back spacing? I'm shooting for 15s or 16s. What is a good size for the front? With what back spacing? Does anyone know the center bore diameter? I just want to order wheels and not have to worry about sending them back or machining them. Thanks in advance.

You could fit a 15x10 with 3.75-4" backspacing, but the tire and wheels will bulge outside the fender. Keeping it stock height will help you get away with that. Any more backspacing will most likely cause the tire to rub the inner bedside.

What's the actual look you're going for?

Not sure on the center bore. Hopefully someone else will chime in on that. Most aftermarket wheels have 3.75" backspacing on 15x8 wheels.

Re: 1970 Short Step Wheel/Tire Size

I wouldn't do 15's or 16's. They just aren't the size to get tires for anymore. My short step has 17x8 front with 4.5" bs and 235 55 17 and rear has 17x9 with 5" bs and 275 55 17. And I'm pleased as punch. And I would probably do 18's just for future tire availability if I had to do it again.

Make sure and keep a taller tire as it helps fill the well. My fronts are 27" and rear is 29". Larger diameter rim also lets the wide front tires tuck in since it clears the tie rod end. My truck is dropped 7" in rear with a leaf flip and 4 1/2" in front with ECE spindles and 2" coils.

Will 3 5/8" BS on a 8" wheel work for front?

A bit of caution on the rear , your 70 came with 2 different rear axle widths , what worked for someone here might not work for you. To many different "looks" to tell you what tire size will make you happy. Take a look around this forum , there's always a ton of great ideas , just find one that works for you.
