Dad's old '80 SWB...

1 Attachment(s)
I thought I'd start a build thread so I could share my progress and stay motivated!

This 1980 SWB was purchased used by my Dad when I was in high school in about '84 or '85.
It was freshly repainted the original dark red (maroon??) although it appears to have originally had a white center stripe.

This truck was always really cool to me, and I have fond memories of taking my first real girlfriend on a few dates in it...

My dad parked it in 2001 and was going to sell it, so I bought from him.
I striped the interior out (was very tired) and pulled all the chrome to send the truck to the paint shop. Then LIFE got in the way and it sat in storage until a few weeks ago (12/2010).

Time to get it back on the road!

Plans for it include:
Chassis prep and paint
Dropping in a new engine... (pics and details to follow)
Repairing factory heat and AC
New paint in the original color...
New interior in black...
spray in bed liner
2 inch rear drop to level the truck
Restore factory Ralleys with T/A Radials
New bumpers and trim (not sure about side trim or smooth!)

Here is a BEFORE pic...

Thanks!
I'm sure I will need lots of help and suggestions.
I'm not new to spinning wrenches on old cars... but have never actually done a full restoration before!!!

Here is the old engine and the one that will replace it...

The old one is a 305 2bbl :(
The new one is a '74 350, flat top pistons, vortec heads, performer intake, holley 600, with HEI

Equiped with a new GM serpentine belt accessory setup from SUMMIT!

I plan on using this AC compressor with the factory air... (will burn that bridge when I get to it!)

Notice the TH350 trans... worked great, but would leak if you let the truck set... (gotta decide what to do with that...)

Use an A/C hose for a '91 K5 Blazer or Suburban without dual A/C, and you will be fine. Hose is about $60 from NAPA.

Thanks! That flag was my 40th birthday present from the girlfriend... we had a party and used it for the backdrop for my band!

Welcome from Haslet! Good looking truck you got there. I like the side trim on those trucks when they're two tone. I can't remember seeing many solids with the trim. Should be sweet either way.

Thank you! Youre just down the road from me!

No updates... what little shop time I had this weekend was spent trying to fix the heated seats in my 04 Tahoe...

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

I am having withdrawal symptoms from not working on my truck!
WAY to early in this project to start getting bogged down...

First it was the holidays, then working on the daily driver, then getting the old Chevelle ready to sell, then 3 of the 4 light fixtures in my shop died...

NOW the band is audtioning new singers....

I have, however, started pulling the power steering box to reseal it.
I really need to push the truck outside and power wash and degrease everything to get ready to paint the frame and front end... but seeing that its 24 degrees today, I dont see that happening!

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Is the RE-POP side trim on the market any good?

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

10 years ago I built this truck from the frame up. Every single piece of molding was aftermarket from LMC. Not perfect but good enough to install without any headaches and a nice look once installed. I liked it enough that I'm about to order a full set for my current buildup.

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Wow that looks good and straight on a very clean truck to, would you have to drill all the mounting holes or could some kinda 2 sided tape ?

Tx Firefighter 01-11-2011 11:13 PM

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

There were lots of holes to drill. We had to do all the body work and assemble the truck. Mark and drill all molding holes, then disassemble the entire truck and paint it before fully reassembling it.
