1987 K10 with a 350,120,000 miles, smoke on start up

It’s been puffing a bit of white smoke on cold start up and I’d like it fixed. Original 350 TBI with 120,000 original miles.

Need some help, I’ve decided to pull the intake and change the gasket and change the valve stem seals. Anything special I need to know? I’ll do a compression test first. Any special seals y’all recommend
Thank you for any help

I think you're on the right track. I like FelPro for seals and gaskets. The teflon seals seem to last longer.

Decided to pull the engine and have it rebuilt.

Just in case you change your mind I put in a link to Rockauto for seals that might fit your engine.
For my 350 overhaul I used the orange with the spring around the top but the blue look pretty good too. In the early eighties I put new black rubber type umbrella seals in an engine. Thirty years later they were all in crumbs at the bottom of the oil pan and plugging the oil screen.

Thanks Vince, after much consideration I’ve decided to pull it and have it rebuilt locally here in Maine. This engine is a son of a gun to get out and I’m no stranger to pulling these things. After 7 hours it’s still not out...maybe time to lock my tool chest and take up knitting.

Glad I changed my mind, this looks like a mess. ( I’ve only put about 6000 miles on it, honest)

Yeah, I think once you pulled those valve covers you would have made that decision anyway. That one looks like it needs some love.

What oil were you using? I have seen cleaner 200,000 miles engines than that one...WOW.

I have only seen a couple engines in my life that were that sludgy. Those were high mileage no maintenance engines. Your engine has some kind of big problems. You're not one of those cold thermostat guys are you?

I’ve only owned it for about 3 years, 6000 miles. Changed oil once under my ownership. Never overheated on me. Dropped it off yesterday with the engine builder.

I had an engine once like that. Pulled it out of a 73 Monte Carlo. Cleaned all the crude up in the oil pan and valleys and put it back in. Seemed to run just fine. (was to broke to rebuild at the time) Figured the PO never changed the oil.
