Getting hood hinge springs back on.
 

Assuming I get my grill back on without too much trouble (see my other thread tonight on that), do you put the hood hinges on first and then put on the hinge springs or do you put the spring onto the hinges first and then put both onto the truck?

I would mount hinge first then add the springs.

With the hinges mounted I use an old hay hook to keep the fingers out of the way

I don't have a hay hook. I use a loop of 1'' nylon tubular webbing like climbers use, and make a 3' long sling. I hook one end of the sling on the spring hook end, put one foot on the front bumper and lean back, pulling on the spring and putting the spring onto the upper hinge notch.

this is the way I have done this in the past, just be sure to use good zip ties. I set this up with bad ties just for the photo. I use my clamps in reverse.

Perfect. Just use the steel ones. The cheezy aluminum 'biners you get with the fake-Sigg water bottles will fail on you.

I made use of the steel posts I set to paint car parts, I mean for my wife's clothe's line, some chain and quick links, and a ratchet tie down or two.

Edit, I should mention I tied the spring up first, just in case (yikes).

I put the springs on before I put the hinges on the truck. I put the hinge in a vise and use a very large pair of 'truck' brake spring pliers. Works every time!

You may very well be older than I am...

Please have a child, grandchild or great grandchild take video of you putting springs on the hinges. This could be fun to watch!

Still single after all these years.
Besides, shooting a 5 minute instructional flick in 16mm, then developing it, and running it on a telecine to transcribe to VHS, then converting VHS to floppy disc, then floppy to whatever is next, for an uploadable format, is technologically unfeasable.

Some guys bolt the hinge to the fender then hook the spring at the back of the hinge and use an old fan belt to pull the spring forward, (extend it) far enough to hook on the front of the hinge. Back before high tech was a thing. ;)

I just use a piece of rope about 4’ long . Hook the spring on the hinge ,double up the rope , run it thru the other end of the spring , pull it back with one hand and slip the hook in the slot on the inner fender bracket. Easy peezy

It really doesn't take that much pull to reload a hood spring, I use an old seat belt with the chrome male end with the hole in it to pull the spring.
