99-06 NBS truck disc brakes on 67-72 truck?
 

Hey guys,

I see there are already a lot of disc brake swap options.... I was just wondering if anyone has swapped the brake system from a later model truck into a 67-72?

These trucks are starting to be plentiful in junk yards so the parts should be getting cheap. The newer NBS trucks use bigger brakes with dual piston front calipers for one thing. Also, it would be nice to end up with a full matched set of brakes where it should all work together properly.

I understand this is not going to be a bolt together solution. I am a machinist with fab and some welding skills that I can apply in this setup. I like to tinker with these kind of things as opposed to buying kits already assembled. I guess you could say I have more time/resources than I have money. :o With that in mind, the local junk yard is having a special on Sunday. Anything you can carry for 50 bucks. I figure it will be easy to carry the entire brake system in a decent sized box.

I have been thinking I would attempt a full 6 lug disc brake swap with the calipers, rotors, master cylinder/booster, and parking brake set up.

Front would either take some kind of custom spindle, or an older style disc brake spindle with the caliper ears machined off and a bracket made to hold the new larger calipers.

Rear I would imagine to be fairly easy other than the need to machine/fab your own mounting bracket. Possibly the mounting flange on the rear end would have to be cut off and relocated for the internal drum brake style parking brake set up.

I have no idea what it would take to mount the master/booster combo to the truck.


I know there are draw backs to this for the average person, but I am a little bit crazy. Anyone want to help me think of things I haven't considered on this yet?

I'm pretty sure that's the caliper that CPP uses on their 13" brake kits, so it can be done with a CPP Modular spindle.

I believe its also the same caliper and setup McGaughy uses with their 13" kit too.

I went to the junkyard today and got a a bunch of NBS brake parts. Still got a few more parts to source but for starters I grabbed front calipers and brackets from a 2005 Silverado and rear calipers,brackets,backing plates, and parking brake cables from a 2003 Tahoe. Grand total of $140.


Planning to use CPP Modular spindles up front so I still need to source a 6 lug hub that uses A3 and A5 wheel bearings. I had been thinking I would use the front drum brake hubs but they apparently use A2 and A5 bearings. My next plan is to go back to the junkyard and get some 88-98 C2500 front rotors. I will then machine the entire rotor surface off and turn it into a bare hub for the newer rotors to sit on.



I will continue to try and update this thread but it will be an ongoing process as I don't have the truck in my garage right now.

Finished the front caliper brackets today. The fronts are basically done other than clean up and a coat of paint.

Honestly I gave barely worked on this project lately. Just been too busy and had too much of a winter funk going on to work on the truck.

My buddy just swapped the spindles & full brake setup from an '02 along with rearend into a '68 Burb. Fairly straight forward.

Stock upper control arms were shortened 5/8" and the holes in the new spindles were enlarged to accept the '68 balljoints & tierods. Brake lines are redone whichever way you want, and the '02 booster & proportioning valve were used. With the new offset the 22" GM transport steelies work perfect. Not much to do to swap the full spindle/brake setup from a newer truck.

I would love to see pics of this. I was eyeing the same setup today at work. I'm all about a dual piston caliper setup using oe parts.

Awesome thread!! Did you get a chance to make the Hubs ? Would you be willing to make a second set of brackets ??

I wouldn't mind taking a new style front suspension, the whole setup with torsion bars and fab it onto our trucks. Newer suspension with a better ride. The rear axle is easy, just swap the whole axle over. Fab the front suspension onto our frames and you would have all the newer style brakes.
