help! truck making a ticking sound.

Hello my 72 chevy pickup is making a ticking sound while driving. The faster I go the faster the ticking sounds. When I'm parked I can barely hear it, even while I rev the motor. I think it's coming from my transmission which is a th350. Any suggestions would help, thanks.

Check U joints in your drive shaft.

Welcome to the board!

If it's ticking when parked, it won't be u-joints. I'll guess either a collapsed hydraulic lifter, or an exhaust leak at or near the manifold. Could be transmission, I don't know. Another possibility is cracked flex plate. They'll sometimes crack between the bolt holes.

could even be a rock in the tire

I was also thinking valves, lifters, or exhaust leak.

Years ago I had a 350 that ticked. I poured in a bottle of Hyperlube and the tick went away. Its only about $12 bucks to find out. If it does fix the problem then you know its valve train related.

Sounds like an exhaust leak. It sounds louder while driving because your working the engine. does it go away when you stop accelerating and coast???

Reach up under the dash and make sure your speedo cable is tight. Do the same thing for the connection at the transmission. Optional - disconnect cable from speedometer, pull through firewall to engine bay, and add some lubrication.

I believe it was an exhaust leak. When I unmounted the driver side exhaust from the header I found that the gasket was broken. I've since then, had hooker headers and flowmaster 44's installed. Gettin' her ready for summer. (*o*)/

Thanks guys, sorry about the lateness of this post. I've been busy with school and work.
Cheers!
