67 SWB 4x4

I have two projects going at the same time. What is currently slowing me down on both of these is our remodeling of the building where we will have our new shop.

So these may move in spurts as time allows.

This truck is a fairly clean original 47k miles 67 body and 327, mounted on a 70 4x4 SWB frame.

I bought it from a gentleman who had several of these trucks in Colorado. I drove it home in Feb, during a mild snow storm, with almost no brakes, clutch, and no E-brake. Steering was kind of lane to lane, until you learned to just let it gently wander down the road. But the gauges worked, and the longer it ran the better it ran.

The bed is off a third truck, and just happened to be the matching color to the cab. It looks like it was pushed out of a B52, instead of bombs....

My plan is to return it close to stock, with a very soft all spring 4" lift, 32"x10" on rally rims, and paint job to match my other project, http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=289840

The frame looks to have all the right equipment, SM465, and somewhere in the past it was made into someone's dream of an off road warrior: 4" lift blocks, poly bushings, dual shocks, dual steering dampners, etc.

Can you tell by looking if this is a 465 or 420?

The cab is almost rust free except on the passenger rocker. First owner let it sit for several years where his sprinkler hit the rocker, and it rotted away. All the body mounts supports are perfect, an easy fix.

Since this is my second, it did not take long to strip it down to where we could start sandblasting.

We now have all the body except for the cab in DP90. The cab got about 75% blasted, and my help flaked on me. So it needs to be touched up and primed, then have the rockers replaced.

I bit the bullet and bought new bedsides, so I have a 67 SWB Fleetside bed for sale. Make me a deal.

I plan on replacing almost all the trim with new, so many other items will be sold also.

At this time, this is where we are.

We still have the frame, axles, and trans to blast, prime, paint, and rebuild.
I will rebend almost all the brake and fuel lines, move the tank to the back, etc.

cool truck... nice little offroad upgrades too. I have a 68 K-10 that i'm working on...

That red one looks pretty nice too.

Not sure on the tranny, the adapter for the TC looks different than mine. any pics of the TC?

Re: 67 SWB 4x4

SM420 has reverse to the left, and down.

SM465 has reverse to the right, and down.

Atleast, thats my understanding of it.

Solid looking start! can't wait to see this progress further.

Here are a few.
I have not spent enough time to really check out exactly what I have.

It's a 465 & 205 for sure.

Must be nice to have something with so little rust to start with!

Re: 67 SWB 4x4

I have been hoping that is what it was.

I want to go back with a real clean simple chassis, no dual shocks and dampners, just one nice softly sprung shock, dampner, and a soft 4" all spring lift.

When we stripped it I threw all that stuff in the dumpster. You could not drive over a BB with out bleeding internally.

We will be adding A/C. None of these have it and our 100+ days are kind of tough.

There is not have much opportunity to 4 wheel around Houston, so it may get a yearly trip to CO & Mont. for some off roading.

With all the work and time these things take to get them perfect, I see no reason to tear em up for the heck of it.

I have another 70 SWB 4x4 step side, 52k miles, my parts/gofer truck and it really draws the comments from all kinds of people. It may be the original med green color with the two tone white, but people of all ages seem to be drawn to it. My wife and daughter can not get over it.

To me driving a truck should take an element of skill that has is being forgotten; 3 on the tree, double clutching, turning the wipers on and off, etc.

I have been spending lots of time reading eveyone's builds and great ideas. It is unreal how much time and money you can save by learning from others. Hopefully I can give some back, (without it being screw-ups).

that one have a 292 in it?

don't know Bill as far as I know...

kind of nice that they used a slightly newer frame, better TC, power steering and disc brakes. I upgraded my 68 to those and it isn't cheap or easy... I did keep my Rockwell TC though.

Nice project to start with! Seems like you know what you're doing. But you cant sell or buy anything, according to the terms of agreement you agreed to. You have to become a supporting member.

Conroe trucker 07-29-2008 09:44 AM

Re: 67 SWB 4x4

Yes, it is a 292 4WD with 3 on the tree. I have never seen another 3 on the tree 4WD. It has some rust spots a dn poor repairs, but is a great driver.

I will not sell anything untill I get the bodies on the two 67s done. Then I will post it properly.

It has finally cooled down a little in South Texas, and I am back on it.
Actually hurricane Ike is suppose to hit here tomorrow morning, and so I should get alot done this weekend if we have power at the shop. If not it will be hand tool time.

We have the cab blasted and in DP90.
Only rust is passenger side rocker and corner from the sprinkler hitting it for 7-8 years.

The 327 has been pulled and is ready to be torn down.
It never checked until I pulled the A/F, but it is a 4 bbl.

I got the trans and transfer case out as one piece to send to be rebuilt.

I did not have a ball joint fork with me or I would have got the axles out also.

Poor truck has been someone's rock climber, but will soon be living a pampered life.....

Question: How can I tell if the rear springs are stock?

msgross 09-12-2008 04:41 PM

Re: 67 SWB 4x4

don't know about the springs but wondering why the exhaust angles back..I thought all 4WD exhaust went straight down...

Nice project, your frame has all the upgrades that i'm doing to mine, PS, disc etc...

PM sent on some engine info, I like the air cleaner as well...

Re: 67 SWB 4x4

I'm no expert on this- but the intake looks '62 or older to me, with the big truck style bypass and 4GC Rochester "4 float" 4 barrel carb.

Thanks for the exhaust input.

I will research that and see what I find.
It all fit before so why change it.
This motor was in a 67 C20, so that makes sense.

We sandblasted the frame, all the motor mounts, transmission mounts, transfer case torq mount, bell housing covers, rally rims, and all the transfer case and transmission housings and covers.

Frame needed a little work, few rock dents and such.
Front horns were badly mangled from a snow plow or something. We cut them off and grafted another clean set on.

The frame is DP90 with a semigloss black alkyd enamel finish.
It looks good, is hard, and easy to touch up.

I am having the trans and transfer case rebuilt at 249 Drive train in Houston, and when he finishes we will touch them up them paint them.

As of now, I will go back with all rubber transmission, torq bracket, and motor mounts. All suspension will be poly. I prefer rubber, but poly is supplied with the new EZ Ride springs and shocks. Hope the ride does not suffer. All poly joints will have zerk fitting bolts.

We are keeping the 4" lift. I will post the old 4" lift springs and blocks for sale soon.

So once the axles are back from being straightened, at 249, things will start moving!

The rims are a high gloss charcoal alkyd enamel.
We wanted a little more contrast between the beauty rims and hubs and the wheels.

I am going to run 33x12.5x15 BF Goodrich ATs.

Finally some headway!

Got the rebuilt axles under it and the new Soft Ride 4" lift, all springs.
Went with the poly and bolts with zerk fittings.

New brakes lines are almost done and the trans has been set in place for now.

We had to cut up a hiddien hitch from CCP and extend it for the rear spring perch. Once again no one was listening..........

Once I blast it and paint it it will go back on.
