K5 blazer license plates. Car or truck?

My 1970 k5 4x4 blazer is tagged as a car. I told treasurer it was a truck but they still tagged it as a car. Can someone tell me if my blazer is classified as a car or truck? Please no guesses

Your title should state "STA-WAGON"

I had mine changed to station wagon in PA for cheaper registration

Here in Canada, Blazers, Broncos etc.. are classified as APV's (all purpose vehicles) and use the same plates as cars. Pickups used truck plates. US laws are probably similar.

I had mine registered as a truck before getting the collector vehicle plates.

My plate says truck so I guess I have no option except to register it as a truck!

I live in NE and had a similar issue when I licensed my 70 blazer...I tried to tell them it was a truck, and they said NO! They wouldn't allow it to be registered as a truck.

How did you ever find these "72" vanity plate or are you the original owner back from 72? I bought some "71" plates that are going on my K5 this year when my TX registration comes up. They were NOS and unissued Texas plates.

Senorx, I just got lucky. I was at a swap meet and this lady had a bunch of Texas vanity plates from the 70s and 80s and when I saw this one I snatched it up as fast as I could.

You hit the lottery with this plate. Cool story.

I looked up the TX DMV and here cars, light trucks, and even RV's are all registered as passenger vehicles with no distinction between them when it comes to registration.

They are titled as station wagons because they have a lift gate and are registered as cars with that type plate on them for that reason.

Not sure what it's like in the US, but here in Canada personalized plates cost $310, and cannot be transferred to a different owner.

Hemi43, Not sure about other states in the U.S. but in Texas when you get an antique tag the DMV only gives you one plate for the back of the vehicle. The vehicle owner can put whatever plate they want on the front including any novelty tags. I also have the option in Texas of using year of manufacture license plates for the front and back. I just have to take them to the DMV so they can get the numbers and verify that they are legible and not beat up.

Re: K5 blazer license plates. Car or truck?

In pa they only have one plate in the rear. To register as a antique it must be in original stock condition. No lift and original style rims have to be on it. Needs a picture from all four sides. If you have a year specific plate it can be used as the antique plate.

Just had my 87 Buick T-type changed to antique last year and PA doesn't require the pictures any more.

Re: K5 blazer license plates. Car or truck?

My buddy tried to register his old triumph as antique and they still wanted pics of it. Maybe it's a case by case basis. But it was a chopper and any mods to the vehicle and it doesn't qualify. Now if they don't ask for pics and I got caught after the fact with my lift and big tires I have no Clue if I'd get a ticket of some kind. I'll have to look into it again now that I'm finally into a drivable state with mine again.

I thought Antique is 30+ years Old vehicles. Classic plates are 20-29 years old where your car sits. Unless that has changed as well?

Louisiana changed the designation of everything without a bed to car registrations about 15 yrs ago when the SUV craze was full tilt. I'd bet it was to increase revenues since car registrations are a lot higher, AND must be renewed every 2 yrs versus every 4 yrs for trucks. To top that, the state is still broke.

Antique is 25 years had it registered as classic and changed it to antique. Classic is permanent registration but still needs inspected antique permanent no inspection. Check out the Penndot website should have it all there they even have a tag for old modified vehicles but can't remember what it is called. I didn't know until the guy at work who has it told me about it.
