60'-66' guys with TH400s...

Can anyone tell me how much trouble it is to get a TH400 with a trans shield to fit under a factory low hump floor in one of these trucks? I'm thinking about going from the TH350 that's currently there to a TH400, but I have to be able to put a shield on it, also. Can anyone give me any input on this? Thanks in advance!

Full hard shield, or just a diaper? I'm running an 80e which isn't radically different sizewise, and it looks like I could squeeze something in there. I'm sure it would depend on exactly how large the shield ends up being and how tightly it fights to the case.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm looking into using an aluminum shield, such as those made by TCI, Hughes, etc. I probably should have mentioned that my engine sits in the rear-most position, which puts the bell housing closer to the firewall.

Is a SFI case out of the budget?

Shame you aren't closer Chris. I'm getting ready to sell the Hughes TH400 w/ ProTree brake, Cheeta air shifter Dedenbear RPM controller and put a stock 400 in mine.

As a FYI, it fits under the stock 4spd hump even with the motor pushed back so close to the firewall I have a he11 of a time getting short SBC rocker covers off,,, but ample room around the trans. Used to have a hard shield on it and don't remember any clearance issues at all. (lots of room under these monsters)

Yeah, using an SFI case is pretty well out of my budget right now, as much as I'd like to.

Marv,
I'm plannin' on building a manual shift 400 for mine, but I wouldn't think that you would have any trouble selling yours. When you say a stock 4spd hump, are you referring to the low hump floor? I've seen both, but the high hump floor pan seems to be a little more rare to these trucks. I know that my TH350 with a TCI shield actually just touches the floor pan on mine. I'm hoping that the 400 shield isn't any taller. If it is, I'll just have to massage things a little, I guess. :) From the sounds of it, my engine sits as far back as ours does, as my valve covers are right up against the firewall, too. You're right; there seems to be a lot of room everywhere else under these trucks.

I have no idea if it's a high or low hump. Can go take some pistures if you need>

I appreciate your offer to take a pic, Marv. If it's not too much trouble, that would be great!!
Ya know, either way I'm gonna have to make it work. I feel that I'm at the limits of what the TH350 can handle, so I've pretty much made up my mind that a 400 will have to replace it.
Marv, Happy Thanksgiving to you, also, as well as everyone else!
