Impact wrench
 

My older half-inch drive pneumatic impact wrench that isn’t as strong as I would like. It won’t remove nuts that I can take off with a breaker bar.

Any recommendations? How are the Harbor Freight units? I’ve got a 25% coupon that is good for a few more days.

Never used the HF gun so can't help there. I have an Ingersall Rand 1/2'' that I absolutely love. It will bust big bolts loose that my 3/4'' craftsman would not even think about touching. Not the cheapest in the world but it is going 15 years old and still works great. Bought it right at Napa

That 231c looks very similar to a MAC tools impact that I've had for 20 yrs, great gun.

Its being collecting dust for the last several years cause I bought an IR 235 titanium, I think the newest model is 2135.

The titanium models hit way harder weigh less, awesome guns. I would also look at the stubby impacts, some even have higher number than what that 231c will have.

I've never owned any HF air tools but I know guys that have and from a professional standpoint they won't last. One guy would have his HF die grinders fail every 1-2 weeks, come borrow mine then say how stupid I was for owning MAC, Snap on etc branded stuff.

Wow the 2235 is double the torque of the 231 however it is double the price!

I dont remember the actual model number on my IR but it was just under $400 and I believe was 800 ft lbs. I use it to take lug nuts off of my F800 bucket truck with no issue

The 231 is 600 ft lbs and the 2235 is over1300. My 25 year old unit is probably like 100

They are in a different league!!

But that 231 design is decades old and will have parts availability decades from now.

If the 231 is the same gun as my MAC and by judging by images its the same, its a great gun built like a tank and weighs like one too.

Thanks for the info. I’ll probably go with the 231. Most of the time the old one I have works for lug nuts but the other day I had to use a breaker bar to remove the 6 bolts that hold the front axle shaft on my 97 Silverado.

I bought the HF Earthquake about six months ago and it hasn't disappointed me yet. It's broken loose every bolt I've asked it to, even working on some really old stuff.

The 2235 is $225 on Amazon. I have one I use everyday. It's powerful, small, and lightweight. I used a 2135 for 10 years and it was a great gun too.

Thanks for the information. I don’t see the 2235 on Amazon for 225 though. There is a 2135QXPA that is just over 200 that has good specs. Can anyone tell me why there are two different torque specs though?
Max Torque: 780 ft.-lbs.
Nut-Busting Torque: 1100 ft.-lbs.

Think of it as constant working torque and impulse torque, the term nut busting torque is a marketing ploy, you want the highest working torque.

Kinda like using a breaker bar and pulling with a constant 700 lb of force, then rearing back and jerking the bar. That impulse jerk will yield a higher "nut busting" torque number.

So I should just look at and compare the 780 ft lbs number when comparing the 2135QXPA gun then?

Another vote her for the composite body 2135 IR wrench. I've had one for 10 years and it started leaking I went into panic mode! Can't be without my impact.

I have a 3/4" Chicago Pneumatic I bought for doing crush sleeves, but it just lives in the box now as the IR is more powerful! IMO, it's worth whatever it costs.

I'd seriously consider looking at that 2235 in the link above....

Get some hi flow air couplers and watch it really come to life!

The titanium max series are great guns, that HF earthquake will have nothing on that IR.

My IR has busted loose pretty much everything I have asked of it until yesterday. I had to replace the trailing arm on my 68 panel and had some good ones on a 72 burb sitting here. Strung the air hose out and the IR took the 72 arms off no issue. Went to remove the 68 and would not budge. Had to break this beast out. It is hard enough to hold in horizontal position but nothing compared to trying to keep it vertical.

Use the Milwaukee 1/2 “fuel” model too. It is very impressive, like it a lot.
Loads of torque, believe over 1000.
