As far as the vertical felt channels on each side, mine also came from Jim Carter. I used the punched out tab at the bottom and used the existing screw holes which I think are 2 on each side. I also added a third screw on each side.

I have doubts that any kind of glue would hold that felt channel. If I was going to use glue I would probably try 3m black rubber door gasket cement like on my 67 door rubber. Once the glass is in the channels they should hold the channels out.

I used no glue in the 42.

I ordered the Steele's door window wipers and got them within 3 days. $73 total to me but they look very right.

Are the door logos painted on or vinyl? They do look really cool, but hand painted to match the originals would be SUPER cool

Re: Progress on 46

CG, they are vinyl this time around. I do have a line on a script painter for $250. May go that route later.

Hood painted and installed with stainless and redlined. For now I removed the duals until I figure out wider fenders. Leaves inside door panel --- may Linex like the 42, big truck running boards, remove and paint bed and fenders.

The truck needs a valve job...

that looks great even without duals, I have to say I would run it like that personally.

Hi Rob C, yea some progress on the fender extenders for the dually. No extenders then singles, extenders then duals. If I use them they will be red with the bed and the fenders gloss black. I have the driver side hanging on the truck bed with fender on it. The fender extender is 14 ga inside and top with a 16 ga outer lip for bolting fender. A slight problem hanging the extender on the 16 ga bed side --- may bounce some. I will have to figure bracing of the bed side if I go that way. Also I will trim the inside of the extender when they come back off the bed for blasting/prep. Painting will be done next spring on the bed, extender and fenders. I have 2 pair of big truck running boards that I will pick and use.

I did get the seat finished and in it along with the inside door panels of which I got a lower half patch panel out of Canada for the driver side.

60 degrees here today.

Re: Progress on 46

Classic Parts but I am not sure if they have any more and I did not see many choices of any on the web- expensive. I am leary of the chrome quality on new aftermarket. It appears the bare steel one I got was hand made (not a stamping like factory) and fitting it to fiberglass fenders and the rest oem parts was a week's task.

On the 42 I had oem big truck frront fenders and a repaired oem grill but my problem was setting it all up on an s10 frame. I used 4 -- 2 lb spools of mig wire on the 42 but besides replacing panels I made a bed, running boards, and floor with tunnel. From my experience figure a grand on a redone workable windshield. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=709744

Probably the 42 and 46 will be all the experience I will ever have on this type of truck so I say good luck on procurring a good fixable grill or a new aftermarket. Prices for parts on these trucks have increased a lot since I started rebuilding them. Perhaps the grill you have is not beyond repair. That would be my first choice. Pot blast it and see what you have. I have a spare usable oem top grill and maybe some verticals for the bottom. Few have a usable spare bottom. Check with us if you have a need. Some of us just like these old trucks.

Been a day or 2. Have been working on other stuff. I have restarted finishing the bed. Did fitment with duals on so now I can ponder the fabrication of a diamond plate big truck type running boards. I will ponder full running boards if alignment/level is close. I will have to fabricate the running board frame brackets unless someone has 4 good ones they can part with. No big deal. I will also make filler panels for the front bottom of the bed. I have the new steering wheel to put on. The fender extenders are removable and can be made srw at anytime. Yea I put a cross brace in the bed to help support the wide fenders - kept it simple for now. It bolts on with the fender extender and can be removed also if srw. Not sure yet if Fender extenders will be red with bed or black with fenders.....

joedoh 07-07-2018 07:04 PM

Re: Progress on 46

srw is still my fav look but those extenders look great too!

Re: Progress on 46

The truck is my 84 year old uncle's and he wants duals. I like it both ways. One piece correct form fenders would be nicer for the duals but I am not a fiberglass guy and the cost for custom work is very expensive around here. All steel 16 ga would have been heavy for 20 inches wide. From what I have seen of CSshades work, his results would be far better than mine. I have a lead on 4 running boards hangers and I still may put stock big truck ones on it. If the truck ever becomes mine -- maybe---- I would probably go sbc, use a sm420 I have and figure out the clutch and brake setup.

I think both the fender extender and fenders will be black. The seam will stay as I have fiberglass to steel. Anything I would do would crack at that seam. A pairr of real steel fenders would be nice.

Re: Progress on 46

I guess if I was doing it I would look for some steel fenders and then split them in the center and add to the middle. It would be a pain but the results would be worth it in the end.

Re: Progress on 46

Agree, thot about doing it to the fiberglass fenders but I do not have the expertise. I will have to wait until someone repops them.

CSHADES 07-10-2018 09:29 AM

Re: Progress on 46

I thought the same with my 40, the fenders on it are glass and I wanted the filler door in the left one but didn't try it. If I was doing your project I would actually consider splitting the fenders, glassing in a metal strip and finishing them. I have never done much with glass but I would try it once just to see if I could make it look right.

Running boards are complete and installed. I used Duplicolor bedliner as the final topcoat because I needed the texture and durability. The truck has everything installed and when I get in the mood I will disassemble the bed for prep and painting. The kerosene road flares are original to the truck. The original case was rusted dust and I wanted them seen so I mounted them open. They are fastened in place and cannot move or be taken out. They were produced by K-D Lighting company in Cincinnati.

Tomorrrow I start changing out the 4 speed crashbox to a sm420. Then I will remove the bed to prep for painting.

Hi all, been a while. I put a one piece drive shaft on it last week. 69.5 inches I eliminiated everything associated with the carrier bearing. Next up is improving the steering. I have adjusted it but would like better, Does anyone know of another steering box and columnn besides the 47-55 conversion kits for a stock straight axle and links?

Van column and short shaft? To what box? can fabricate....

Hi Dennis ;

I just found this thread and I like what you're doing here .

I missed the engine part, is it a 235 / 261 ? .

I miss my '46 3100 from my youth long long ago .

dennislbrooks 10-02-2019 04:10 AM

Re: Progress on 46

It is a 1953 235 powerglide engine with a 261 head -- got a reworked head free -- and electronic ignition.
