12 Bolt changing carrier
Hello, my truck has a peg leg and I want to put a Eaton Posi. I want to reuse the 3.73's, do I have to set up the gears again or can I just change the carrier?
Thanks! |
Re: 12 Bolt changing carrier
At a minimum you'll need to check the backlash. You might have to change the side shims.
I just installed a TrueTrac and with the new differential and new bearings I think I only had to shift mine roughly .010. |

With the carrier removed, I'd check pinion pre-load and make sure the bearings feel good. And re-install the carrier shims just like they came out. That should get you in the ballpark, if not right on.
Check those carrier bearings, the best you can, and the races, too. When I added a posi to mine many years ago, I replaced all four bearings, but it's a real PITA, and you'll definitely have to read up on pinion pre-load. I found this to be a good way to hold the carrier in place while torquing the ring gear bolts. Stand on the tire to hold things in place. |
