1972 Cheyenne Super with 1971 parts?

Hey everyone, I'm new here and have a question:

I recently bought an orange and white 1972 Cheyenne Super 1/2-ton 4x4 from a friend, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what year it really is. The title lists the truck as a 1972, and the VIN supports that, but it has 1971 door panels, no phillips head screws on the upper inside of the doors, a rear-view mirror attached to the roof (rather than glued to the windshield), and a throttle arm rather than a cable going to the carburetor. I know that GM sometimes did running model year changes, but this seems a little far fetched... Could this thing really be a 1972 without all the 1972 changes?

Welcome from N. Calif!

That is odd... mine is an early '72, built in August 1971, and it has all the 1972 parts. I wonder if yours is a '71 truck that was somehow retitled as a '72, including a VIN swap?

look at the rivets holding the vin plate if they are round poprivets it's not original if theres a raised area where the mirror mounts to the header panel it's a 71cab // whith everything you describe i'm afraid you've got a frankenstein truck made up collection of random parts

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super with 1971 parts?

Lots of things could be going on. It sounds like it was restored to me. Someone put on 67-71 doors and door panels. Maybe they swapped the cab too but transferred the VIN tag over to the new cab. If it was a 69/70 cab that would explain the throttle rod, although maybe a PO just liked the throttle rod better.
Maybe it was even a full body swap truck. They swapped a 69/70 body over, put the original VIN tag back on, and swapped a 71/72 grill back on it.
There are so many things that could have happened. Do you have any way of tracking the previous owners down?

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super with 1971 parts?

The first few trucks that were made in 1972 had 1971 cabs. I have seen proof of this because a guy I know has/had a very early 1972 truck that had the 71' cab with the windshield mirror on the roof. He looked at the serial number and it was #6 from the first 72' made at the KC plant. Your truck could have been a 72' super if it was built very very early in the run, but it sounds like someone put it together with all of the 71' parts on it. Good luck. Trevor

I guess vin swap. That as we all know is really easy on these trucks. I probably should not say this...

throttle rod ended on the last 70 model truck, that makes me think a lot of part swapping has been done

Well, it may be a Frankentruck... the pop rivets on the VIN plate in the door jamb are round. At least the parts swapping resulted in some good parts, like tilt, tach, side toolbox, and what's left of an a/c system.

Still sounds like a nice truck. If it is the one in your avatar, i "think" that is a 69-70 paint scheme. What does the tag inside the glovebox show?

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super with 1971 parts?

Actually, the glovebox just raises more questions. All the paint on the truck is flat and chalky, but there are some runs I know the factory would not have caused, so I'm pretty sure it was resprayed at some point. The VIN is the same on the sticker as it is on the door jamb, and all the options line up EXCEPT for A/C (which it now has, and I didn't think you could convert without an A/C cab...) and the color code, which is "565 Red/Orange Black."

I can't seem to find any info on color code 565, but whoever put this thing together must have assumed that meant orange paint, red interior pieces (like the door panels, A/C vent housings, headliner, etc), and black carpet and dash pad. Nowhere does it say "Orange & White," which is clearly is now. I wonder if it once had a black painted top?

Anyway, I was planning on painting it next summer, after I pull out all the dents and replace the driver's fender and the toolbox door (scored one this weekend, not rusty, for $50!). I've always liked the white top & white side stripe down the middle, so maybe I'll just go that route. At least I won't feel guilty for changing something that was "original."

All in all it still sounds like you have a solid truck. It isn't unusual to get a truck that has had some mods done...Like you said you have the right parts to make your truck a nice ride.

After 40+ years there are few that haven't been "molested" in some way. From your description I would guess it has been redone at some point in it's life and they used what they could find that was in good shape to do so.

They probably did a cab swap to put A/C in it...
I've thought of doing that with my 72... so it's REALLY possible.

Figured it out! One of the previous owners, who runs a 67-72 parts company, saw my post and gave me a call. It's a ’70 cab with a/c, and it did have a black top. I'm glad it's now orange & white...
