Today was a big accomplishment, had the Generator rebuilt,who knew it'd only cost $10. Afterwards I had some help installing the Generator, I then wired the Generator on my own, I bought a battery and some gas and it cranked right up. Even though it was a 3 speed on the column I learned how to drive it within seconds.Parked it up in my Barn for the night.It drove wonderful, although it really needs new Shocks.This truck has been in my Family for three Generations, its got a long story with it.Going to restore it slowly but surely



This is what I was talking about, I swear my name is scratched into the metal.You can see the C, sorta see the A, barely make out the L but you can clearly see the E and the B.I must of scratched in on it when I was younger


Laughed pretty hard when I went to shut the door and the Window and Door handles fell off :lol: can't wait to show my other family members when they come around, pretty proud of this truck and how I got it running

Drove the truck up and down our road, and it did excellent with changing gears etc, wasn't able to get to Primer the cowl cover I can probably do it some time soon.This things drinks gas like its nothing

Daze, what is weird was it was in the glove box and when I went out to my Pawpaws old big tool box, I found the other one that had a "red" center piece and that rusty one had a "black one" so I guess he bought them as a pair maybe ??? either way its pretty cool how it ended up right back with the other one

Me too, along with hundreds of others.... My grandfather kept one on his key chain. I just noticed the dash pic shows factory turn signal and what appears to be a factory radio??? With the condition of the rest, the dash area look pretty darn good. Please tell me the radio works!

I believe it does work Orrie, but there is no speaker.As far as I know it was taken out by my Grandfather.The dash is in excellent shape has very very small rust holes on the end but I am sure it'll be fixed.Hell even the original glove box is still in there(in great shape) except for the damn fact A LOT of stink bugs were in there sleeping, I disturbed them big time :lol:

Bad news, When I went for a ride in my pasture.I hit a bump and the Hood Emblem came off and got ran over.I am a loss for words, beyond mad.I hope it can be fixed (welded or whatever) Upset me a lot to find it in the pasture broken in two :(


The E-Brake cable is fine, but the Handbrake isn't holding it tight like it should be.I think its down on the frame that bracket



There is "HOT Air" coming from the back of the valve cover, guessing its normal but its melting the Paint off of the Valve cover :lol: while I was checking things, the radiator was up to date.Brake lines and brakes were good.What type of Shocks did these come with?, because I am bouncing all over the place because it doesn't have any.Other then that the truck "Mechanically" is up to date on things and runs perfectly.Shifts like it should, stops like it should....but hell this truck sounds like a monster truck coming through :lol: finally figured out how to do the Choke etc, although I have a question about the Choke, if I leave it out after starting it up..Could it just make the engine cut off??.Because at times the truck will cut off, not sure if its because I forgot its still in 2nd Gear or something else.

Might want to take some time and crawl around, over and under to check the rest of the nuts and bolts to see what else the PO just sort of attached. Might find some important stuff. I did on mine this summer and found I had not tightened down the front motor mount nuts all the way and had a rear brake line extension bracket that I had not installed.

Orrie,I put all of the old bolts in a Cup filled with Pepsi and sure enough it ate the rust away from the metal BUT, however I don't know exactly where these Bolts go.and also Orrie, Can you show me how the Parking Brake Cable is supposed to go in the bracket on the frame?, I think I left the PB up and it knocked it out of place because the cable isn't cut or broken but more like its out of place.The Bed fenders need new bolts and with that I am going to try and get the stainless steel bolts to pretty the trucks bed up..I've mad a decision on the First by and thats going to be a "Front Bed panel" for the bed because thats all I'll need to complete the bed, I will probably need new Bed Steps but I'll just see what a Welder can do with it.The Tailgate seems to be savable it has almost a micro rust hole on the bottom right side "hoping" it will be savable because that will save me some money.Looking at all thats needing to be done to this truck really makes me scratch my head on how all of this is going to be completed.There are little dimples on the inner bed panel and I am not sure how you would fix that (no I am not looking to buy new ones) I'd like to save these because in my opinion these are savable.I think I'm going to just put a seat cover over the trucks Seat instead of having it re-done

Here is a photo of the brackets at the back brace. The cable from the front mounts in the hole on the right side with a U shaped bracket. Note the spring and rod used to attach it to the pivoting flat bar. The cable runs behind the pulley on the drivers inside frame, then up to the lever on the frame near the steering box. The level is acuated by a rod that goes to the handle under the dash. I included a photo of the parts on my workbench.

Thanks Orrie, I don't know what happened to my pulley it must of fell off or something because a pulley isn't there.The Cable seems to be in good shape. I can't think, I don't think the truck had a pulley when I brought it back home.If I would have left the Handbrake up you don't think it would of popped the Pulley off??? I don't think it would of because it looks to be "bolted" in...Do they make an aftermarket one ?

Check "The Filling Station" and LMC for aftermarket parking brake pulleys. I know they weren't available back in 2010 but maybe now. I thought I was going to have to replace the one on my '55 GMC as it was rusted solid. I kept spraying it with "Kroil" for a few days and got it spinning freely. Mine is bolted in as well, and I'm sure that is factory.

I like your passion to keep family history alive with this truck and hope you find the '71 GMC too. I have a couple of long-time family GMCs also.

Not many young guys have an interest in old trucks any more, much less actually trying to build one.

i am sure they are not that difficult to fab. i figure - a pully wheel from a sliding glass door screen should get ya in the ball park and just fab and bend some metal bracket to hold it .
if i could find my old one i would send it to ya - but alas i cant find it

I am the type of guy who loves old vintage things, ever watched American Pickers? that is the type of person I am.The love I have for this truck is out of this world and I'm going to keep it all original instead of making it custom

Daze is right, all you need is something that allows the cable to change direction with out rubbing. I spend a lot of time wandering thru the "good" hardware stores just looking at the different things that might be repurposed. Bicycles, motorcycles, lawnmowers, weight benches, etc. all have pulleys that would work, bracket is a simple angle with a stepped bolt for the pulley. There should be two holes in the frame just behind the master cylinder.
