205 Transfer Case leak

1 Attachment(s)
I know it has been covered, but I have been fighting trans fluid leaking past the seals in the trans to transfer case. I have replaced the 2 seals in the coupling, but I saw a thread that stated you need to also replace the o ring that is on the transfer case input shaft. I have a gasket/seal package that has alot of stuff in it. I also have a space 205 and I can see what is left of an o ring on it. I had Square Bodies with 208 t Cases in them, so I am not real familiar with 205s. Can anybody chime in on their experiences?

Re: 205 Transfer Case leak

My 72 Blazer was filling the 205 transfer case with automatic transmission fluid. I replaced both seals and the O-ring. The coupler slides over the O-ring on the input shaft of the transfer case. I believe the main problem with mine was the O-ring. Someone had put silicone on the splines and when I tried to remove the O-ring it broke. The O-ring was hard and brittle probably 40 years old. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I am sure that is what the problem is, just wanted to back up my opinion.

Re: 205 Transfer Case leak

Mine did the same i replaced the seals then 2 weeks later it was filling up again i found out the coupler in the adapter the female splines were wore out causing the shaft to walk up and down i had to replace that coupler but it was differnt than the old one, the old one had a bearing pressed on it the new coupler was not machined for a bearing , had to have driveline shop machine it down and to press the bearing on it, once done the bearing and new coupler fit nice and true inside the adapter and hasnt leaked since that was 10 years ago,
