Mirror holes, new ones to drill others to fill
4 Attachment(s)
I'm replacing the big ugly mirrors with the single post, 3 hole, rectangular mirrors.
Existing top holes are fine (I need to add the 3rd hole to each side). My questions are: 1. What did u guys use as nuts (I bought the stainless bolts with my mirrors, but the upper holes are just empty)? I'm assuming just use stainless flat+lock washers and appropriate nut. Or should I use stainless flat washer with nylock nuts? 2. I was planning to put cutoff bolts in the lower holes then use bondo glass as top filler. But, the embedded nuts appear to be pertruding outside the door surface. Do I grind them down or bang them in so they either fall out or are inward?? |

Mine had been wallowed out to the size of a quarter. Was gonna re skin the door but decided to plug the holes instead. I cut 18 gauge out and welded it in. Put a little filler on it and presto the holes are gone. Nothing wrong with your idea either.

I used the JB Weld method that has a great write up in the DIY section because I don’t know how to weld. It worked really well.

Re: Mirror holes, new ones to drill others to fill
Yeah I’m mostly worried about the fact that the outer part of the screw holes extends past the door surface. It will need to be ground down or hammered into the door. I’m leaning towards grinding the edges down (putting my headless screws in first to fill the majority of the holes). Then use filler to finish it. Either jb weld or bondo glass.
My welder is a cheap flux that will warp the panels too much and burn through. |
Re: Mirror holes, new ones to drill others to fill
There is a flat plate that is tapped for the three holes that goes inside the door. I would grind the nutserts down knock them in and use a small backer and weld the holes shut.

Welding is the way to do it. The JB or panel bond will leave ghost lines a little while down the road

You might check in the bottom of the door. PO might have left it there for you to find

I feel it's only fair to warn you..
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...postcount=6698 and btw, lmc refunded the mirrors and return shipping, not the first complaint on these the gal said.. no idea if the actual oems are any better but the aftermarkets don't work at all.. and I've heard that around the forum a few times.. oh, and agree with above, welding closed 100% with filler metal pieces for larger holes is the only way to go.. good luck! |

the 67-69 style with longer arm and rounded three hole mount should be nice, I have that style on my 65 but also different hole pattern.. I really wanted to keep it original but the right side was torn off on a narrow bridge and I couldn't find the right color arm.. so I put a pair of the ss lmc mirrors on for temp to get by and they work just fine.. good luck! https://dl.dropbox.com/s/j9ezt1qj8f8...44527.jpg?dl=0 |

Plus my previous mirrors didn’t use the plates. They were 4 bolt with an arched mounting arm. I’m thinking of just making my own inner brackets. I already have 5/16 nuts. I could just weld them to some sheet metal I have. |
Re: Mirror holes, new ones to drill others to fill
I just made my own also. 3"x 3/16" flat bar used a transfer punch and drilled and tapped it. Over built but it got the job done.
