Junkpile Jimmy

I have a 50 GMC 1/2 ton short bed that I bought for a parts truck back in 08. I ended up selling the 49 Chevy and had this one sold a few times but no one ever showed with the money. Fast forward a few years, I needed a truck so I was going to throw some parts I had laying around at this one and have a beater. Well that idea got a case of the might as wells and I started buying parts as I ran across them. I'm finally making progress and buying new parts.

This is where I found it.

I borrowed a rollback picked it up and pulled the mangled fender off . It then sat until last summer.

Heres a little motivation for you, Jimmy!

It's not mine but I LOVE this truck and especially the color

That truck is sweet and is kind of what I was going to do originally. The plan has changed a few times. As you will see when I post more to get caught up to where I am now.

I am going for a reliable daily driver with a clean lowered original look. the Motorvation will be a 270 GMC 6 with a T5. It will have a few updates like the trans but for the most part the newest thing on it will be 1957 I have spent enough money now that the plan probably wont change much going forward.

Originally I had planned to do a S10 frame. I picked up another 50 GMC with a S10 frame . I ended up letting most of this stuff go when I sold the 49. The GMC did have a nice set of doors that I will be using along with some other misc things. The original frame had some bad rust or I wouldn't have cut it apart. The Chevy is the 49 that started it all.

After I decided to keep it and use the original frame ,I started buying parts when I ran across them. I picked up a rust free front clip , seat, and a 54 trans crossmember. At the time I planned to use a 292, sm420 4spd, and a 67 rear from my parts stash.

Sorry for the delay I did a YouTube worthy fall on the ice and haven't been doing much lately.

Around this time was when it started getting away from being a beater. Overdrive would be much nicer than a SM420 4spd .I picked up a T5 from a wrecked 85 Trans am with 40,000 miles . A week later while killing time at the local pick and pull I found a 88 S10 T5 sitting on the ground just picked it up and walked away without getting dirty. I also got a set of 51 front backing plates to get away from Huck brakes. I then ran across a 52 rear with 57 3.90 center section, new brakes and mounts already welded on.

My original cab is pretty rough so I have been on the look out . This one is much nicer and came with most of the patch panels I need to repair it. I plan to put all of the factory vents, crotch cooler, and gas filler hole back in it.

A few years ago my radiator was stolen by scrapers. I saw a ad on Craigslist for 49 Chevy parts. I went to take a look they had 2 GMC radiators. It was a kid his Dad and brother working on a 49 for his first ride. They needed a bed I was planning on getting a Mar -k so I said I would sell mine cheap. Late one Friday they called and wanted it the next day. That was my motivation to start the tear down. I put on a new set of shoes and pulled it out.

OK well my new computer died and Ive lost a bunch of tear down and part pics, but it was the usual take apart , bag , and tag deal.

Here's where am at now. I have to weld up a couple cut spots on the frame , remove the original bellhousing crossmember to install the 54, and its ready for blasting and paint.

I picked this up 2 weeks ago . 53 228 it runs great. I am supposed to go pick up the motor I plan to use next weekend. 57 270 . I might end up running the 228 temporarily depending on what the 270 needs.

I went on a little road trip Sat to pick up my 270 it's out of a 57 350 2 ton . 15 hours , 600 miles round trip, one tank of fuel , a leaking AC compressor and sitting in DC traffic twice in one day is something I probably wont try again.

I'm on hold with this one for a few weeks. I am buying another truck . I will decide which one I want to keep once I get it home . I have also been organizing my mess and getting stuff together to get my panel going.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that cant pass up buying cool stuff. The truck I'm getting is a 42 Chevy. If you end up with the caprice I have a 383 LT1 left over from one of my Trans Ams, that should really wake it up. I'm making progress on the organizing . Ive found stuff I didn't know I have.

Thanks , I just keep looking and buy when I find something for a decent price. It just takes patience which I normally don't have a lot of. I enjoy the search and the road trip to get it so that helps.

It was completely unplanned but it looks like this project is done. I picked up a 1942 Chevy 1/2 ton yesterday. It is a rough but complete original with very little rust through. The good thing is all of the mechanical stuff and drop axle I have for the 50 will work on this .

If anyone is interested in the 50 frame and body send me a PM.

My grill is trashed. I will keep an eye for extra grills when hunting parts.
