pick up sleeper question
 

All,
i am thinking of adding a sleeper to my 1988 crew cab. i know there are two styles, one with an accordion boot and the other style you must have a sliding glass window to access the sleeper, there is a boot, but it just sits near the cab, but it doesn't seal against it.

i plan on getting the style with an accordion boot and no side windows, that being said, i was wondering how bad the road noise will be. i have thought about lining the inside with sound deadening material, and then having an upholstery shop glue head lining material inside of it to keep noise down.

i am asking this from other owners experience if road noise was or road noise is a problem

By "sleeper" do you mean a topper/shell over the entire bed, or one of those enclosed things that just has room for one person to lie down right behind the cab ???

If you mean a topper/shell then Yes there will be a lot of noise unless you fit out the bed with a floor or carpet or some beds, etc. We had one when I was a kid and until we got the interior installed there were all kinds of weird noises including cracks and pops from the suspension.

We had the kind of "boot" where you take out the back window of cab and front window of camper and have a vinyl sleeve that snaps into both sides. Works pretty good except it is more or less permanent since you don't have a back cab window if you take off the camper. Finally got rid of the boot when we got a new pickup and just had a window put into the front of the camper. A pickup cab heater doesn't seem to keep up with all that space.

I never had the kind where you just have matching sliding windows and a "doughnut" that seals between them but it seems like a good idea if you want to take the camper off sometimes. But you would have to be pretty slender and agile to get through it.

Yes sir, no camper shell, just a pick up sleeper. i found a couple if pics to illustrate

Okay, I never had one of those.

I wouldn't think the noise would be too bad since those have a "floor" in them and only touch the bed rails.

But - it seems like you would need a full width boot just to climb in and out from the cab which I think is the only access. Unless it's just a place for your dog to ride :lol:

I just sold one for 200. It was ridiculous to call it a sleeper. I’m 5-11 250. I couldn’t crawl thru the slider nor would I have been able to lie down. In my opinion, maybe good for a dog or securing valuables is it.

Yea, i probably will never sleep or take a nap, but i really like the way crew cabs look with a sleeper

Looks are everything these days I suppose …

The boot we used to have for a camper shell wasn't an accordion, it was custom fitted vinyl in a sort of U-shape - where the sides of the U snap into the inside of the front of the camper/sleeper and the inside of the back of the cab, and the bottom of the U spans the gap between cab and campers. It was a complete circle of course; the U-shape is just the profile of how the material was gusseted. When installed properly the material was stretched tight between the cab and camper.
